Sombr is the stage name of Shane Michael Boose, a New York City-born singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who later based his career in Los Angeles. He plays guitar, piano, bass, and drums, and his recordings have been released through his SMB imprint and Warner Records. His catalog developed from independently created singles into an eight-song EP, a debut studio album, and a series of major international hits.

Long before a wider audience discovered his work, Boose built his foundation through self-directed production. Near the end of elementary school, he began experimenting with multitrack recording and vocal harmonies in GarageBand. He moved to Logic Pro X in middle school and learned production techniques through online tutorials. At Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, he studied as a vocal major while continuing to make records in his Lower East Side bedroom. After “Caroline” gained viral attention in 2022 and record companies began contacting him, he left school during his junior year to pursue music full time. His parents worked in events and communications connected with organizations including amfAR and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

The Sombr project first appeared publicly with “Nothing Left to Say” in October 2021. Boose has explained that the name incorporated his initials, SMB, while also reflecting his emotional state when he adopted it. After “Caroline” went viral, he signed with Warner Records in early 2023. That September, he released the eight-song EP In Another Life, co-produced with Tony Berg. The collection included “Burner Phone,” “Ivy,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” “You’re So Pretty,” “Why Are We Like This,” “Silhouette,” “My House Is Warm,” and “Weak.”

The greatest acceleration began with “Back to Friends,” first released in December 2024, and “Undressed,” released in March 2025. Both songs spread rapidly through social media and became international chart hits. “Back to Friends” eventually reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100, topped Spotify’s United States and global charts, and reached Number 1 at alternative and pop radio. “Undressed” also reached the Hot 100 top twenty and became a major hit in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Those releases were followed by a series of high-profile performances and new songs. On May 20, 2025, Sombr made his late-night television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with “Back to Friends.” On June 3, he performed “Undressed” and a cover of Lorde’s “Ribs” for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. He released “We Never Dated” in June and “12 to 12” in July, with Addison Rae appearing in the “12 to 12” music video.

Sombr announced his debut studio album, I Barely Know Her, in August 2025 and released it on August 22. The ten-song album included “Back to Friends,” “Undressed,” “We Never Dated,” and “12 to 12,” along with “Crushing,” “I Wish I Knew How to Quit You,” “Canal Street,” “Dime,” “Come Closer,” and “Under the Mat.” Written entirely by Sombr and co-produced with Tony Berg, the album entered the top ten of the Billboard 200.

His breakthrough year brought major awards recognition. Sombr won Best Alternative at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards for “Back to Friends” and performed “Back to Friends” and “12 to 12” during the ceremony. He was later nominated for Best New Artist at the 2026 Grammy Awards, where he performed “12 to 12” as part of the Best New Artist presentation. The award went to Olivia Dean.

New recordings continued in 2026 with “Homewrecker,” “Potential,” and “My Body Isn’t Ready.” “Homewrecker” became his fourth entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and his highest first-week chart debut to that point. Touring also expanded from his sold-out Late Nights & Young Romance dates into the You Are the Reason arena tour, which includes a November 23, 2026, performance at Madison Square Garden in his hometown.
