DMX built a career that began in Yonkers, New York, where he developed his earliest skills as a performer through beatboxing before entirely shifting to writing and recording his own material. His work attracted attention in the early nineteen-nineties when he appeared in The Source magazine’s Unsigned Hype column, a feature that placed a spotlight on rising talent. That early exposure set him on the path toward a record deal, which led to his signing with Ruff Ryders Entertainment and Def Jam. From there, his recording career moved quickly and forcefully, arriving at a moment when hip hop was evolving nationwide.
He entered the national stage with a run of back-to-back albums that immediately positioned him as a major figure in the genre. His debut, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, arrived in nineteen ninety-eight and featured the breakthrough singles “Get at Me Dog,” “Ruff Ryders Anthem,” and “Stop Being Greedy.” Later that same year, he released his second album, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, which further expanded his reach and capped a remarkable twelve-month period that saw him place two number-one albums on the Billboard Two Hundred.
His third album, …And Then There Was X, continued the momentum and delivered “Party Up (Up in Here),” one of his most widely recognized singles. His subsequent releases included The Great Depression in two thousand one, Grand Champ in two thousand three, Year of the Dog… Again in two thousand six, Undisputed in two thousand twelve, and Exodus in two thousand twenty-one.
Throughout this period, his singles continued to chart and reach audiences across radio, television, and live venues. Recordings such as “Slippin,” “Who We Be,” “Where the Hood At,” and “X Gon Give It to Ya” expanded his profile and formed a body of work that fueled his tours, soundtrack appearances, and television exposure. His recording catalog placed him among the most commercially successful hip hop artists of his era, with several platinum and multi-platinum albums released in rapid succession.
His work did not end with music alone. DMX moved into film and television early in his career, beginning with roles in the nineteen ninety eight film Belly and expanding into titles such as Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, and Never Die Alone. These appearances brought his presence into the mainstream outside of the recording world and established him as a recognizable performer in multiple formats. He also published the book E.A.R.L.: The Autobiography of DMX in 2003, which presented his life story in his own words.
His influence extended into various forms of charity and community work. He participated in outreach connected to youth programs and remained a public figure whose visibility often intersected with social issues. His life included numerous legal challenges, but through every stage, he maintained a career that continued to produce new recordings, new public appearances, and new performances until he died in 2021. His final album, Exodus, was released posthumously and featured contributions from longtime collaborators, marking the last chapter in a career spanning four decades and leaving a catalog that remains widely studied and referenced.
