Black Veil Brides began in 2006 in Cincinnati, Ohio, as the vision of frontman Andy Biersack, who was just a teenager at the time. Intent on combining the heavy theatricality of glam metal with the raw energy of post-hardcore, Biersack released early demos and EPs under the band name before eventually relocating to Los Angeles. By 2009, the lineup began to stabilize, with Biersack joined by drummer Sandra Alvarenga and guitarist Chris “Hollywood” Bluser. Though the band would continue to undergo changes, these early years set the tone for what would become one of the most visually distinctive and passionately followed bands of their generation.
Their full-length debut album, We Stitch These Wounds, was released in 2010 through StandBy Records and made an immediate impact, debuting at number 36 on the Billboard 200 and topping the Billboard Independent Albums chart. The album’s success was fueled by singles like “Knives and Pens,” which resonated deeply with fans drawn to its themes of alienation and defiance. Following the debut, the lineup solidified with the addition of drummer Christian “CC” Coma, lead guitarist Jake Pitts, and rhythm guitarist Jinxx — the configuration that would carry them into their most commercially successful period. Their second album, Set the World on Fire, arrived in 2011 via Lava Records and expanded their sound while increasing their visibility, particularly with tracks like “Fallen Angels” and “Rebel Love Song.”
Black Veil Brides took an ambitious leap forward in 2013 with the release of Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones, a concept album that explored themes of rebellion, identity, and resistance against authoritarian control. The album debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 and was accompanied by a full-length film, Legion of the Black, which helped flesh out the narrative world they were building. Their self-titled fourth album followed in 2014, produced by Bob Rock — a move that brought both polish and pedigree to their sound. That album debuted in the Billboard Top 10 and continued their upward momentum.
In 2018, they released Vale, their fifth studio album and a thematic continuation of their previous conceptual work. Later, in 2020, the band chose to revisit their beginnings with Re-Stitch These Wounds, a re-recording of their debut album that showcased their growth as musicians and producers. In 2021, they returned with The Phantom Tomorrow, another concept album centered around themes of heroism and self-empowerment. Songs like “Scarlet Cross” and “Fields of Bone” brought them back to the top of rock playlists and reaffirmed their relevance in a changing musical landscape.
Black Veil Brides have received numerous awards and recognitions, including Revolver’s Golden Gods Award for Best New Artist in 2011, and Best Guitarists (Jake Pitts and Jinxx) in 2012. They also won Kerrang!’s Best Newcomer Award, and their song “Unbroken” was featured on the soundtrack to The Avengers, connecting them with a wider audience outside the core rock scene. Over the years, the band has also maintained a strong presence at major festivals and tours, including the Vans Warped Tour and Download Festival, as well as supporting acts like Falling in Reverse on international tours.
Outside of the band, Andy Biersack has pursued a successful solo career under the name Andy Black, releasing his debut solo album The Shadow Side in 2016. His work outside of Black Veil Brides has allowed him to explore a different musical palette while still connecting with fans who discovered him through the band. His crossover into film and television, as well as his presence in the fashion and alternative culture scenes, have further cemented his role as one of the genre’s leading frontmen.
Through a mix of uncompromising visual aesthetics, a loyal fanbase known as the BVB Army, and a commitment to fusing melody with theatrical hard rock, Black Veil Brides has maintained their position in the genre for nearly two decades. They’ve achieved longevity by staying connected to their roots while constantly pushing forward creatively. Whether through concept albums, cinematic videos, or arena-filling live shows, they continue to thrive as one of the most recognized and enduring bands in modern rock.
