Julien Baker grew up in Bartlett, Tennessee, where music first entered her life through church and family. Her early years were filled with traditional sounds along with the alternative and punk scenes she eventually discovered on her own. Those influences stayed with her and would later shape the emotional intensity of her writing. She began playing guitar in high school and eventually went to Middle Tennessee State University, where she first started recording her own songs in the quiet hours of the campus studios.
Her first album, titled Sprained Ankle, arrived in 2015 while she was still attending the university. The songs carried a raw and honest quality that listeners connected to immediately. Her voice and guitar created a sparse landscape that made every lyric feel close and personal. The album appeared on several year end lists and introduced her to a larger audience who saw something powerful in the simplicity of her approach.
Baker returned in 2017 with her second album titled Turn Out the Lights, released on Matador Records. This time she expanded her sound with piano, strings and a broader musical palette while still keeping her confessional style at the center. The album explored themes such as faith, mental health, identity and the struggle to reconcile pain with hope. It cemented her reputation as one of the most emotionally fearless writers of her generation.
Her third album, titled Little Oblivions, arrived in 2021 and marked another step forward. It became her first record to enter the United States Billboard 200 chart and found her working with a full band sound. She played many of the instruments on the album herself, pushing deeper into the production side of her craft. The songs addressed addiction and self-reflection with the same honesty that had defined her earlier work, but now carried more force and fullness.
Alongside her solo career, she formed the group boygenius with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. The trio released an extended play in 2018 and their first full album, titled The Record, in 2023. The project brought a different side of Baker forward, one shaped through collaboration and shared voices. Boygenius won three Grammy Awards in 2024, including Best Alternative Music Album, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Performance, which further expanded her profile among listeners who already admired her as a solo artist.
