Lostprophets formed in Pontypridd, Wales, in 1997 and emerged from the same South Wales rock scene that produced a wave of heavy and alternative bands around the turn of the millennium. The group’s early lineup centered on vocalist Ian Watkins, guitarists Lee Gaze and Mike Lewis, bassist Stuart Richardson, and drummer Mike Chiplin, with Jamie Oliver later becoming an important part of the band’s sound through keyboards, samples, turntables, and backing vocals. Their music drew from alternative metal, post-hardcore, hard rock, punk, electronic music, and hip-hop without staying fixed in any one of those styles.

The band signed with Visible Noise and released The Fake Sound of Progress in 2000. The album was later reworked and reissued internationally after Lostprophets signed with Columbia, helping songs such as “Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja” and the title track reach a much wider audience. Start Something followed in 2004 and became a major step forward commercially, driven by songs including “Last Train Home,” “Burn Burn,” “Last Summer,” and “Wake Up (Make a Move).”

Lostprophets continued their rise with 2006’s Liberation Transmission, produced by Bob Rock and featuring “Rooftops (A Liberation Broadcast),” “A Town Called Hypocrisy,” “Can’t Catch Tomorrow (Good Shoes Won’t Save You This Time),” and “4:AM Forever.” Mike Chiplin left before the album was recorded, with Josh Freese playing drums in the studio and Ilan Rubin later becoming the band’s touring and recording drummer. The group returned with The Betrayed in 2010 and completed its studio catalog with Weapons in 2012, by which time Luke Johnson had taken over on drums.

Lostprophets ended in 2013 following the criminal case against Watkins, who was convicted of serious sexual offenses against children. The other members later moved forward musically, with Gaze, Lewis, Richardson, Oliver, and Johnson forming No Devotion with singer Geoff Rickly. Lostprophets left behind five studio albums along with a much larger collection of EP tracks, B-sides, covers, demos, remixes, bonus recordings, and standalone releases that extend well beyond the best-known album material.
