Julien Baker grew up in Bartlett, Tennessee, where church music, punk, hardcore, emo, and alternative rock all became part of her musical vocabulary. She began playing guitar as a teenager and attended Middle Tennessee State University, recording early solo material during late-night sessions in the school’s studios.
Sprained Ankle arrived in 2015 with nine spare performances built primarily around Baker’s voice and electric guitar. “Rejoice,” “Something,” “Everybody Does,” “Go Home,” and the title track established the emotional directness and careful use of space that would define her early work.
Baker expanded that approach on Turn Out the Lights in 2017. Piano, strings, woodwinds, and layered guitars surrounded songs including “Appointments,” “Sour Breath,” “Hurt Less,” and “Claws in Your Back,” while the writing continued to examine faith, guilt, isolation, recovery, and the difficulty of accepting care.
Between albums, Baker released standalone material that became an important part of her catalog. “Funeral Pyre” and “Distant Solar Systems” appeared together in 2017, followed by a collaboration with Manchester Orchestra, the paired songs “Red Door” and “Conversation Piece,” and the Sub Pop single “Tokyo” backed with “Sucker Punch.” Her covers of Elliott Smith’s “Ballad of Big Nothing” and Frightened Rabbit’s “The Modern Leper” also showed how naturally she could inhabit another writer’s work.
Little Oblivions arrived in 2021 with Baker performing guitar, bass, keyboards, mandolin, banjo, and drums across a full-band production. “Hardline,” “Faith Healer,” “Favor,” “Relative Fiction,” “Ringside,” and “Ziptie” helped the album become her first release to reach the top forty of the Billboard 200.
The following years brought the Little Oblivions (Remixes) EP, the three-song B-Sides collection, soundtrack work, and collaborations with artists including Wild Pink, Paramore, Touché Amoré, Medium Build, Calvin Lauber, SOAK, and Quinn Christopherson.
Alongside her solo career, Baker formed boygenius with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. The trio’s album the record earned three Grammy Awards in 2024, including Best Alternative Music Album, Best Rock Performance, and Best Rock Song.
In 2025, Baker and TORRES released the collaborative country album Send A Prayer My Way. Its 12 songs included “Dirt,” “Sugar in the Tank,” “Bottom of a Bottle,” “Tuesday,” “Sylvia,” and “Goodbye Baby,” placing their Southern backgrounds and shared vocal harmonies inside arrangements built from acoustic guitar, piano, fiddle, pedal steel, and rhythm-section playing.
Baker returned as a featured vocalist in 2026 on “The Invisible Hurt” by the Saddest Landscape. The collaboration continued a catalog that now includes three solo studio albums, live sessions, EPs, standalone singles, covers, remixes, soundtrack pieces, guest appearances, and a full collaborative album with TORRES.
