Before the major-label albums and Grammy nights, John Mayer was a Connecticut teenager who became consumed by the guitar after seeing Michael J. Fox play in Back to the Future. Born in Bridgeport and raised in Fairfield, he attended Fairfield Warde High School and played in local bands, including Villanova Junction. Mayer enrolled at Berklee College of Music in 1997 but left after two semesters. He then moved to Atlanta with guitarist Clay Cook, where they formed the short-lived duo LoFi Masters and performed in coffeehouses and clubs before separating over musical differences.

Mayer’s solo career began taking shape as he wrote and circulated his own material. Working with producer and engineer Glenn Matullo, he recorded the independent EP Inside Wants Out in 1999. The project included early versions of “Back to You,” “No Such Thing,” “My Stupid Mouth,” and “Neon,” along with songs including “Victoria,” “Love Soon,” “Comfortable,” and “Quiet.” His appearance at South by Southwest in 2000 led to a deal with Aware Records, and Columbia Records later issued Room for Squares nationally in 2001.

Room for Squares introduced Mayer to a broad audience through “No Such Thing,” “Why Georgia,” and “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” The latter won the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. His second studio album, Heavier Things, arrived in 2003 and reached number one on the Billboard 200. “Daughters” earned Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, confirming that Mayer’s early success extended beyond a single debut-album cycle.

By the middle of the decade, Mayer was pushing his catalog more deliberately toward blues, soul, and rock. He formed the John Mayer Trio with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan, releasing the live album Try! in 2005. Continuum followed in 2006 and earned an Album of the Year nomination while winning Best Pop Vocal Album. “Waiting on the World to Change” won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, and “Gravity” later earned Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance.

Mayer continued moving between pop songwriting, guitar-centered records, acoustic music, and Americana across Battle Studies, Born and Raised, Paradise Valley, The Search for Everything, and Sob Rock. A granuloma on his vocal cords delayed touring around Born and Raised, but he returned to performing and recording after treatment. His official catalog also includes the early EP Inside Wants Out, live albums such as Any Given Thursday and Where the Light Is, soundtrack recordings, standalone singles, and releases with the John Mayer Trio.

Beyond his own records, Mayer has produced, written, sung, or played guitar for artists including Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Alicia Keys, Jack Harlow, Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, Harry Styles, Daniel Caesar, Khalid, Jhené Aiko, Barbra Streisand, Herbie Hancock, Eric Clapton, Common, Zach Bryan, and Lainey Wilson. In 2015, he joined three former Grateful Dead members and other musicians to form Dead & Company, which became a major part of his musical identity.

Mayer has won seven Grammy Awards from nineteen nominations. His winning recordings include “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” “Daughters,” “Waiting on the World to Change,” “Say,” and “Gravity,” while Continuum won Best Pop Vocal Album. His career has also been defined by a substantial touring history, including solo acoustic tours, full-band performances, John Mayer Trio concerts, and extended work with Dead & Company.

Outside music, Mayer established the Back to You Fund to support charitable causes, including education, health care, the arts, and community programs. In 2017, he created the Richard Mayer Scholarship Fund in honor of his father’s ninetieth birthday, providing assistance to Bridgeport public-school students planning to pursue careers in education. He also co-founded the Heart and Armor Foundation, which supports scientific research and programs addressing the health of military veterans.

After Sob Rock, Mayer continued releasing collaborative and standalone recordings. These included “Automatic Yes” with Zedd, “Better Days” with Zach Bryan, and “Forever Young” with David Ryan Harris and Derek Trucks in 2024. In 2026, he joined Lainey Wilson for “Phone, Keys, Wallet,” extending a catalog that has repeatedly moved between pop, rock, blues, soul, country, and live improvisation.
