Leon Thomas III built his career through a combination of musical dedication and early exposure to professional performance. He grew up in Brooklyn, where his interest in the arts was supported through stage work that placed him in front of producers at a young age. His early theatrical roles gave him experience that translated into television, film, and eventually a recording career that highlighted both his singing and songwriting abilities. Over time he became known for navigating acting, producing, and R&B songwriting with equal commitment.
His first major role came from Nickelodeon productions, most notably as Andre Harris on Victorious. This platform introduced him to millions of viewers and allowed him to incorporate original musical performances into scripted television. He also appeared in August Rush, contributing vocals to several songs in the film’s soundtrack, including “La Bamba,” “Someday,” “This Time,” and “Break.” These performances underscored his skill as a singer and positioned him as a young artist capable of delivering emotionally expressive work within a cinematic setting.
As his career developed, Thomas moved decisively into recording and production. In 2012 he signed with Rostrum Records and soon released his first mixtape, Metro Hearts, which featured “Forever” and a cover of “Take Care.” His work as a producer grew in parallel, and he collaborated with artists across contemporary R&B and pop. His songwriting and production contributions include work with Ariana Grande, Drake, and Post Malone. These collaborations demonstrated a growing command of studio craft, giving his career a second dimension as a behind-the-scenes creative force.
His next releases expanded his approach to recording. In 2018 he and music partner Ye Ali formed the duo The Rascals, who became active as producers and writers on major R&B and hip hop projects. Thomas also issued Genesis, a project that brought together his influences in soul, jazz, and R&B. He later released Electric Dusk in 2023, which further established his identity as a solo artist who blends smooth vocals with detailed arrangements and a strong melodic sensibility. His single “Crash and Burn” showcased his ability to merge contemporary R&B with introspective writing.
Thomas also earned significant recognition for his collaborative work. His contributions to Love, Pain and Forgiveness and Un Verano Sin Ti led to Grammy nominations, and he won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Song for co writing “Gold Roses.” These achievements revealed the range of his abilities across writing, vocal production, and arrangement. His career trajectory continued to evolve as he signed with Motown Records in 2022, marking a new chapter with one of the most storied labels in R&B history.
Outside of recording and acting, Thomas worked with organizations focused on arts education. His involvement with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America connected him with programs that provide young performers with creative opportunities. Through workshops and public engagement, the supported initiatives encouraged students to pursue music, theater, and writing, offering a pathway similar to the one that shaped his own early experiences.
What makes Thomas so respected within the industry is the balance of his talents. He is known as a vocalist who can interpret a melody with subtlety and strength, as a songwriter who understands emotional detail, and as a producer who hears the whole architecture of a track. His work resonates with listeners who appreciate R&B built around musicality rather than trends, and he brings an authenticity informed by years of navigating multiple creative roles. His continued success in film, television, and music reflects a career shaped by versatility and a commitment to expressing emotion through sound.
