Tokio Hotel began in Magdeburg in 2001 around twin brothers Bill and Tom Kaulitz, bassist Georg Listing, and drummer Gustav Schäfer. The four musicians first performed under the name Devilish, playing clubs and talent events while the members were still in their early teens. Bill’s appearance on Star Search in 2003 helped bring the group to producer Peter Hoffmann and eventually led to a new name and a major-label recording career.

The breakthrough came with the German-language album Schrei in 2005. “Durch den Monsun” reached number one in Germany and Austria, while “Schrei,” “Rette mich,” and “Der letzte Tag” extended the band’s success. A revised edition, Schrei – so laut du kannst, followed in 2006 after Bill Kaulitz’s voice changed during adolescence.

Zimmer 483 arrived in 2007 with “Übers Ende der Welt,” “Spring nicht,” “An deiner Seite (Ich bin da),” and “Heilig.” The international release Scream brought English-language versions of songs from the first two German albums to a wider audience. “Monsoon,” “Ready, Set, Go!,” “Don’t Jump,” and “By Your Side” helped Tokio Hotel expand throughout Europe and into North America.

The bilingual Humanoid project followed in 2009, with separate German and English versions built around songs including “Automatisch,” “Automatic,” “World Behind My Wall,” “Dark Side of the Sun,” and “Lass uns laufen.” The Welcome to Humanoid City tour and the live album Humanoid City Live documented the band’s shift from teenage rock success into a large-scale international production.

After several quieter years, Tokio Hotel returned with Kings of Suburbia in 2014. “Love Who Loves You Back,” “Run, Run, Run,” “Girl Got a Gun,” and “Feel It All” introduced a more electronic, club-oriented direction. Dream Machine continued that evolution in 2017 through “Something New,” “What If,” “Boy Don’t Cry,” and “Easy.”

The years surrounding the planned Melancholic Paradise project produced a steady run of singles rather than a completed album. “Melancholic Paradise,” “When It Rains It Pours,” and “Chateau” were followed by the anniversary recordings “Durch den Monsun 2020” and “Monsoon 2020,” the VIZE collaborations “White Lies” and “Behind Blue Eyes,” and “Here Comes the Night.”

2001, released in 2022, looked back to the year the band formed while continuing its modern electronic-pop sound. The album included “White Lies,” “Bad Love,” “Happy People,” “HIM,” “When We Were Younger,” “Berlin,” “Just a Moment,” and the rerecorded “Durch den Monsun 2020.” Collaborations with Kraftklub, VIZE, Daði Freyr, and VVAVES reflected the group’s increasing openness to outside artists and producers.

Tokio Hotel remained active after 2001 with “Monsoon” alongside VIZE, Leony, and Niklas Dee, “Home” for the Netflix series Kaulitz & Kaulitz, “Colors of the Wind” for A Whole New Sound, and “Fata Morgana” with Nina Chuba. The 2025 releases “Hands Up,” “How to Love,” “Miss It (At All),” “One More Day,” and “Changes” continued that run.

In 2026, the band released “Changes (Live in Hamburg),” “California Nights,” “Na und ?!,” “Memory Lane,” “Catharsis,” and “Without You.” These recordings led into the announced album ENCORE, scheduled for October 16, 2026. Released on July 24, 2026, “Without You” became the latest Tokio Hotel single before the album’s scheduled arrival.

Across German-language rock, English-language adaptations, electronic pop, soundtrack work, remixes, live recordings, and collaborations, Tokio Hotel have maintained the same four-member lineup. Their catalog traces a band that repeatedly changed its sound while preserving the dramatic melodies, visual identity, and connection with fans that defined its earliest success.
