Chicago emerged from the city’s thriving late-1960s music scene with an approach that was unlike most rock bands of the era. Formed in 1967 as the Big Thing and later known as Chicago Transit Authority, the group combined rock guitars, keyboards, jazz-influenced horns, and ambitious arrangements. Founding members Robert Lamm, Terry Kath, Peter Cetera, James Pankow, Lee Loughnane, Walter Parazaider, and Danny Seraphine developed a sound that could move from extended improvisations to tightly written pop songs.
The band’s debut album, Chicago Transit Authority, arrived in 1969 and introduced ‘Beginnings,’ ‘Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?,’ and ‘Questions 67 and 68.’ The double album Chicago II followed with ’25 or 6 to 4,’ ‘Make Me Smile,’ and ‘Colour My World.’ During the 1970s, Chicago became one of America’s biggest recording acts with songs such as ‘Saturday in the Park,’ ‘Feelin’ Stronger Every Day,’ ‘Wishing You Were Here,’ and ‘If You Leave Me Now.’
Following Terry Kath’s death in 1978, Chicago continued recording and eventually found another period of extraordinary commercial success. Chicago 16, Chicago 17, and subsequent releases produced ‘Hard to Say I’m Sorry,’ ‘Hard Habit to Break,’ ‘You’re the Inspiration,’ ‘Will You Still Love Me?,’ and ‘Look Away.’ Its albums also contained instrumentals, long-form suites, experimental pieces, and lesser-known compositions that demonstrate how much more the band recorded than its familiar radio hits.
Chicago’s catalog continued through the 1990s and beyond, including the shelved and eventually released Stone of Sisyphus, big-band standards, Christmas projects, and later new albums. Chicago XXXVI: Now and Chicago XXXVIII: Born for This Moment carried the band’s songwriting into the twenty-first century. This alphabetical list brings together the original studio tracks, individual movements of the early suites, holiday songs, compilation exclusives, and selected officially released alternate performances, followed by a chronological discography.
