Mountain formed on Long Island, New York, in 1969 when guitarist and vocalist Leslie West joined with bassist-vocalist Felix Pappalardi, keyboardist Steve Knight, and drummer N. D. Smart to create a band built around powerful guitar work, deep blues roots, and hard rock energy. West had been playing in R&B and blues contexts before seeking a harder sound, and Pappalardi, already known for his work producing the Cream album Disraeli Gears, brought a broader musical perspective to the group. Smart was soon replaced by drummer Corky Laing, solidifying the lineup for the band’s first major work and setting the stage for their defining contributions to rock music. Mountain’s early sound was rooted in hard rock and blues rock, with occasional elements that would influence heavier musical styles during the next decade.

Their debut studio album, Climbing!, was released in 1970 and became Mountain’s most commercially successful album, reaching number 17 on the Billboard 200. The record featured what would become their signature hit, “Mississippi Queen”, which peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 and grew to greater prominence through inclusion in the cult film Vanishing Point and extensive radio play. Climbing! also included other notable tracks such as “Never in My Life” and Pappalardi’s vocal performance on “Theme for an Imaginary Western”, helping establish the band’s combination of heavy riffs and melodic elements. The success of this album earned Mountain a place on the national stage and reinforced West’s reputation as a commanding guitarist and singer.

Beyond Climbing!, Mountain released several additional studio albums in the early 1970s. Their second album, Nantucket Sleighride, came out in 1971 and reached number 16 on the Billboard chart, though it did not produce a single as large as “Mississippi Queen”. That same year they issued Flowers of Evil, which combined one side of studio material with another side of live recordings from a show at New York’s Fillmore East. Mountain’s first live album, Live: The Road Goes Ever On, was released in 1972 and captured performances recorded at Woodstock, the Academy of Music in New York City, and London, underscoring the band’s potent stage presence. In 1974 the band released Twin Peaks, a live double album recorded during a tour of Japan, and later that year they issued Avalanche, the final studio album with Felix Pappalardi as a member.

Mountain’s career in the 1970s was marked by periods of intense creativity and abrupt interruptions. The original group disbanded in early 1972 after extensive touring, with West and Laing moving on to other projects such as the power trio West, Bruce and Laing with former Cream bassist Jack Bruce. Mountain reformed in various incarnations throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, often with West and Laing at the core of the lineup, and released Go for Your Life in 1985. That album was the band’s first studio release in over a decade and was dedicated to the memory of Felix Pappalardi, who died in 1983 after being shot by his wife, Gail Collins Pappalardi, a collaborator on the band’s album art and some lyrics. Throughout these changes, Mountain maintained a commitment to hard rock rooted in blues traditions while exploring new musical terrain.

In the mid 1990s Mountain recorded Man’s World, released in 1996, followed by Mystic Fire in 2002, which was financed in part by European support and supported by tours in both Europe and the United States. In 2007, the band released Masters of War, a collection of Bob Dylan covers featuring a guest appearance by Ozzy Osbourne. This release would be the band’s final album of original or newly recorded material under the Mountain name. However, Mountain continued to tour and perform with various members into the late 2000s. Alongside studio work, Mountain’s recorded legacy includes compilations such as The Best of Mountain and live recordings that preserved their dynamic performances for fans old and new.

Mountain’s influence extended beyond their own albums. The opening live recording of the song “Long Red” became one of the most sampled drum breaks in hip hop history and has been used in hundreds of songs by artists such as Jay-Z, Kanye West, Nas, and A Tribe Called Quest. Their music has been featured in video games such as Guitar Hero III and Rock Band, helping introduce their classic sound to younger audiences. Fellow Long Island native Howard Stern has cited Mountain as one of his favourite bands, and guitarists such as Martin Barre of Jethro Tull have acknowledged Leslie West’s influence on their playing. These cross-genre impacts underscore Mountain’s reach beyond the immediate realm of hard rock.

The band’s members and collaborators earned respect from peers and fans for their musicianship and intensity. West’s guitar work and commanding stage presence were central to Mountain’s identity, earning him admiration from other major guitarists and securing Mountain’s place in the history of rock. The band’s willingness to embrace heavy, riff-driven music at a time when rock was still defining its broad contours helped shape the development of heavy musical styles in the 1970s and beyond. Mountain’s catalog of studio and live albums, and the enduring appeal of songs such as “Mississippi Queen”, ensure that the band’s contributions will continue to be recognized and celebrated.
