Mt. Joy began as a musical partnership between Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper, two friends from the Philadelphia area who first connected through their shared love of songwriting. After their high school years they found themselves together again in Los Angeles in 2016, where early writing sessions led to the first recordings under the name Mt. Joy. The name referenced a hill in Valley Forge National Park near where they grew up, anchoring their new musical identity to a place that shaped them. They recorded “Astrovan” in September 2016 as their first single, and the track introduced their blend of indie rock and folk inspired storytelling to a rapidly growing audience.
The band expanded when bassist Michael Byrnes joined after meeting Quinn and Cooper through a Craigslist posting. Producers Caleb Nelson and Peter Kadis became involved early, helping refine the group’s sound. Drummer Sotiris Eliopoulos and keyboardist Jackie Miclau rounded out the lineup by 2017, and Mt. Joy began releasing additional singles including “Sheep”, “Cardinal”, and their breakthrough hit “Silver Lining”. The momentum from these songs led to festival performances and support slots for well known acts, building the foundation for their debut album.
Their first full length album, Mt. Joy, arrived on March 2, 2018. The record introduced the world more fully to their introspective songwriting, melodic arrangements, and emotional vocal delivery. “Silver Lining” reached number two on Billboard’s Triple A chart and helped drive the band’s popularity through streaming, with tracks from the album accumulating enormous digital numbers. Touring followed in the United States and Europe, further strengthening their presence as a compelling live band.
Mt. Joy recorded their second album, Rearrange Us, with producer Tucker Martine in Portland. The project took shape between 2019 and 2020 and was released on June 5, 2020. Pre release tracks included “Rearrange Us”, “Every Holiday”, “Strangers”, and “Let Loose”. The album became their first to enter the Billboard 200 and reached high positions on several specialized charts. In an important effort outside of music, the band donated its first week of album profits to Campaign Zero, an organization focused on addressing police violence. Plans to tour with the Lumineers during this period were interrupted by the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic.
The band’s third studio album, Orange Blood, was released on June 17, 2022 after being recorded at Headroom Studios in Philadelphia. Singles including “Lemon Tree”, “Orange Blood”, “Evergreen”, and “Bathroom Light” preceded the album, and the band supported it with a wide ranging headlining tour. These releases reflected an ongoing refinement of their sound and expanding emotional range.
In 2023 and 2024 Mt. Joy remained active on the road, performing at major festivals such as Innings Festival, Boston Calling, and WonderWorks. They also appeared on tours with Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds and supported Greta Van Fleet during European and United Kingdom dates. During this period they contributed “Santa Drives an Astrovan” to the charity album A Philly Special Christmas Party, with Quinn and Cooper credited as writers.
On May 30, 2025 Mt. Joy released their fourth studio album, Hope We Have Fun. The album features singles such as “Highway Queen”, “She Wants To Go Dancing”, “More, More, More”, “Coyote”, “God Loves Weirdos”, and “Lucy”. It also includes guest appearances by Gigi Perez and Nathaniel Rateliff. The record charted in the United States and the United Kingdom and demonstrated Mt. Joy’s continued growth in both songwriting confidence and musical breadth.
The band has also made meaningful contributions beyond their recorded work. During the promotion of Rearrange Us, Mt. Joy hosted an Instagram livestream that raised more than thirty thousand dollars for Music Cares and Philabundance, supporting musicians in crisis and food security efforts. They publicly encouraged fans to support Black voices, to protest peacefully, to vote, and to seek education during a period of national unrest. They also served as ambassadors for HeadCount, a nonpartisan voter registration organization, and released the single “New President” ahead of the 2020 election to encourage civic participation.
