For the mainstream Rock audience, Blodwyn Pig is one of those bands that are not really well known. Even as a big-time rock fan myself, growing up in the seventies, I had never heard of them before. It wasn’t until I was playing in a rock band in which everybody in the group was 10 years older than me and grew up in the 60s that I was introduced to this group. I’m not even sure if any of their music is on CD. I discovered them while looking through the record collection in my lead guitarist’s house. I was blown away by how good this band sounded, especially the guitar and sax work. So if you have never heard of them before and I highly recommend for you to check out the songs I listed below my opening paragraph. And one thing: if you’re a Jethro Tull fan, you probably are aware of this group.

# 10 – Ain’t Ya Comin’ Home, Babe?

We open up our list with a song from the band’s first album called Ahead Rings Out. The album was released in 1969. The song was written by all four members of the band, including founding member and former Jethro Tull guitarist  Mick Abrahams on guitar and vocals, Jack Lancaster on all the horns and woodwinds, Andy Pyle, and Ron Berg on drums. Ain’t Ya Comin’ Home, Babe? was the album’s closing track.

# 9 – Lies

After the band had been broken up for 23 years, the group reunited in 1993 and released a brand new album. In the middle of all the grunge sounds with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, a band came roaring back with their blend of blues and psychedelia; it was good to have them back again. This was the opening track on the album.

# 8 – The Squirreling Must Go On

With this rocking instrumental track, we go back to 1970 and the release of the band’s second album, Getting To This. Listen to the sound of that bass. This one was written by Mick Abrahams and Andy Pyle. Its

# 7 – Walk On The Water

More than probably any other Blodwyn Pig song, you can really hear the connection to  Jethro Tull on this track. It reminds me of “A New Day Yesterday.”

# 6 – Sweet Caroline

Nope, this is not the song that you’re thinking of. It is not a cover version of Neil Diamond’s classic. It’s a swinging boogie blues tune. It was released in 1969 as the B-side to the next song on this list.

# 5 – Dear Jill

Dear Jill was the band’s first single that they released. It’s pretty interesting that this is a Slow Blues ballad and it was released as a single. History is not kind to slow blues ballads being released as singles.  It just doesn’t reach the mainstream. Nonetheless, it’s a great tune.

# 4 – See My Way

If you haven’t been convinced yet, just have good taste; this band was. This track should seal the deal. This Mick Abrahams song was released on the band’s second album in 1970. It’s an interesting video recording as it’s mostly just one shot, and of course with that Beat Club background in the background. We didn’t really see the show in the United States, but it was big in the UK.

# 3 – It’s Only Love

When you listen to a song like this with its feel-good, swinging blues rhythms, powerful singing, smoking playing, and those catchy hook vibes, you ask yourself, why wasn’t this a hit, or at least, why haven’t I heard this before? I mean look at the way this band jams together. You need to watch this video below.  I love the way the dude plays two horns at the same time

# 2 – Summer Day

I love the guitar and bass riff on this one. You can hear the sounds Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and so many more of the bands that defined the sound of the late 1960s. This was actually released as a single in 1969 when it was released.

# 1 – Same Old Story

We close out our exploration of the band Bloodwyn Pig with one of their most well-known songs. This one was released in 1970. It’s an intense one which, as you have probably already discovered, was an essential element in their music. Their blues-infused psychedelic progressive sound fueled the band’s artistry, which this powerful track defined so clearly. Just listen to the bass and drums as they take a marching-band groove and turn it up to 11.
