The voice that carried Foreigner from ambitious newcomer to arena-rock institution belonged to Lou Gramm, the Rochester, New York, singer whose power, clarity, and emotional control became inseparable from the band’s classic sound. As Foreigner’s co-founder and first lead singer, Gramm handled the vocals on the group’s defining hits and co-wrote many of them with Mick Jones. Their partnership earned both men induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.

Before Foreigner, Gramm built his first national profile with Black Sheep. The group became the first American band signed to Chrysalis Records and released the single “Stick Around” before moving to Capitol Records for the albums Black Sheep and Encouraging Words in 1975. Black Sheep’s momentum ended after an equipment-truck accident forced the band off a tour with Kiss, but one of its records had already reached Mick Jones.

Jones invited Gramm to audition for a new band in New York in 1976. The group was briefly known as Trigger before taking the name Foreigner, and Gramm shortened his surname from Grammatico. His two principal tenures with Foreigner, from 1976 to 1990 and again from 1992 to 2003, produced performances on songs including “Urgent,” “Juke Box Hero,” “Break It Up,” “Say You Will,” “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” and “I Want to Know What Love Is.”

Gramm’s solo career began while Foreigner was still at its commercial height. Ready or Not, released in 1987, delivered “Midnight Blue,” “Ready or Not,” and “Lost in the Shadows” from The Lost Boys soundtrack. His second solo album, Long Hard Look, followed in 1989 with “Just Between You and Me,” “True Blue Love,” and “Hangin’ on My Hip.”

After leaving Foreigner in 1990, Gramm formed Shadow King with Bruce Turgon and released the band’s self-titled album in 1991. He also recorded “One Dream” for Highlander II: The Quickening. Gramm returned to Foreigner in 1992, appeared on the band’s 1994 album Mr. Moonlight, and later contributed additional lead vocals to Petra’s “We Need Jesus.” His recovery from surgery for a benign brain tumor in 1997 became one of the most difficult chapters of his career.

Following his final full-time departure from Foreigner, Gramm continued recording with longtime friends and collaborators. His guest work included “Shed My Skin” with Liberty N’ Justice, three lead-vocal performances on Don Mancuso’s D:Drive, the holiday song “It’s Christmas,” and “Sometimes” with Alan Parsons. The Lou Gramm Band released its self-titled Christian rock album in 2009, extending his catalog beyond the polished melodic rock of his first two solo records.

Foreigner’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024 brought Gramm renewed recognition alongside Mick Jones, Ian McDonald, Al Greenwood, Dennis Elliott, Ed Gagliardi, and Rick Wills. In 2026, Gramm returned with Released, his third solo album. The ten-song collection reunited him creatively with Bruce Turgon and introduced tracks including “Young Love,” “Long Hard Look,” “Heart and Soul,” and “Time Heals the Pain.”
