Victoria Monét McCants built her career by pairing performance training with years of professional songwriting before her own records became the main headline. She was born on May 1, 1989, in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to Sacramento, California, as a teenager when her parents relocated for work. As a child, she appeared in Catholic school holiday plays and sang in a church youth choir. By junior high school, she had formed a dance group, and that work eventually led to teaching at two dance studios, long before her name became associated with major pop and R&B credits.

Her first steps into the music business came through writing, learning in studios, and closely following producer networks. After trading poetry with an older cousin, she began turning that writing into songs while working with a Sacramento-based producer and learning how producers shape records. That path led her to connect with Rodney Jerkins on MySpace, resulting in an invitation to audition in Los Angeles for his girl-group project Purple Reign. The group signed with Motown but was dropped before releasing music, and that setback pushed Monét toward songwriting as a way to earn income while continuing to build her own career as an artist.

Songwriting became the engine that put her in rooms with major acts while she continued recording her own demos. One of her earliest significant placements appeared on Diddy – Dirty Money’s 2010 album Last Train to Paris. She wrote hooks, recorded demo vocals, and sent those versions out in the hope that labels might retain her voice on the finished recordings. Atlantic Records chief executive Craig Kallman heard one of her demos during a label meeting and offered her a record deal that same day. Monét later acknowledged that her songwriting career gained traction faster than her solo recording career, even while she continued pursuing both.

Her relationship with Ariana Grande became a defining thread in her credits and placed her songwriting on Grammy-level stages. Monét co-wrote songs across Grande’s studio albums from Yours Truly through Positions. Her work connected to Thank U, Next earned Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, while “7 Rings” received a Record of the Year nomination. In 2019, Monét and Grande released “Monopoly,” which became Monét’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 as a recording artist.

Monét released Nightmares & Lullabies: Act 1 in 2014 and Nightmares & Lullabies: Act 2 in 2015. She followed those projects with Life After Love, Pt. 1 and Life After Love, Pt. 2 in 2018. Touring also became part of her profile, including opening appearances on Fifth Harmony’s 7/27 Tour and Ariana Grande’s Dangerous Woman Tour.

Her commercial breakthrough as a recording artist came through the 2020 EP Jaguar and her debut studio album, Jaguar II, released in 2023. “On My Mama” reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year. At the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, Monét won Best New Artist, Best R&B Album for Jaguar II, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. She later expanded the project with Jaguar II: Deluxe and A Jaguar II Christmas: The Orchestral Arrangements in 2024.

Monét opened another chapter in 2026 with “Let Me” and “Reach Out.” Both songs were announced as previews of her second studio album, Frequency of Love, scheduled for release on October 2, 2026. Because the album had not yet been released when this article was updated, only recordings that were already publicly available appear in the A-to-Z catalog.

Monét has earned three Grammy Awards from ten nominations. Outside her own releases, her public story includes songwriting for other artists, motherhood, and industry support work. Her daughter, Hazel, became the youngest Grammy nominee in history at age two after her laughter appeared on “Hollywood,” which was nominated for Best Traditional R&B Performance. Monét also partnered with the Black Music Action Coalition to establish the BMAC x Victoria Monét Music Maker Grant, providing financial support, mentorship, and career guidance to emerging Black artists.
