Long before Travis Tritt became a staple of country radio, he was a songwriter working the edges of the Nashville system and trying to get his compositions heard. Raised in Marietta, Georgia, he learned guitar as a child, sang in church, and began writing songs while still in school. His earliest progress came through years of club performances and demo recordings that helped him develop the mix of country, blues, gospel, and Southern rock that would define his career.
That groundwork paid off when Tritt signed with Warner Bros. Records in the late 1980s. Country Club arrived in 1990 and immediately separated him from many of his contemporaries. The title track introduced his swaggering side, while “Help Me Hold On,” “Drift Off to Dream,” and “I’m Gonna Be Somebody” established the emotional force of his singing.
It’s All About to Change followed in 1991 with “Here’s a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares),” “Anymore,” “Nothing Short of Dying,” and “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’” with Marty Stuart. The last of those earned Tritt and Stuart a Grammy Award, and the album confirmed that he could balance vulnerability, defiance, traditional country, and Southern rock without treating those qualities as separate identities.
T-R-O-U-B-L-E, Ten Feet Tall and Bulletproof, and The Restless Kind extended that run through the 1990s. Tritt’s catalog during those years included “Can I Trust You with My Heart,” “Foolish Pride,” “Tell Me I Was Dreaming,” “More Than You’ll Ever Know,” and “Where Corn Don’t Grow.” He also recorded “Take It Easy” for the Eagles tribute album Common Thread and added “Only You (And You Alone)” and “Sometimes She Forgets” to Greatest Hits: From the Beginning.
Collaborations remained an important part of Tritt’s work. He recorded “This One’s Gonna Hurt You” and “Honky Tonkin’s What I Do Best” with Marty Stuart, joined a large group of country artists on the Grammy-winning “Same Old Train,” sang “Out of Control Raging Fire” with Patty Loveless, and appeared with the Charlie Daniels Band on “Southern Boy.”
Down the Road I Go returned Tritt to the top of the country chart in 2000 through “Best of Intentions” and also produced “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive,” “Love of a Woman,” and “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde.” He followed it with Strong Enough, My Honky Tonk History, and The Storm. The later collection The Calm After… revisited the Storm sessions and added “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough” with his daughter Tyler Reese Tritt and “Stay with Me.”
After a lengthy break from full studio projects, Tritt returned with Set in Stone in 2021. Produced by Dave Cobb, the album included “Ghost Town Nation,” “Smoke in a Bar,” “Ain’t Who I Was,” and “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like That No More.” A ten-song acoustic edition followed in 2022. In 2023, Country Chapel brought together gospel standards and new material rooted in the church music of his childhood.
