Seattle in the 1980s was a city brewing with something different, and Chris Cornell was right in the middle of it. Before the world knew what grunge was, before Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or Alice in Chains broke through, Cornell was already pushing boundaries. Soundgarden did not follow trends; they helped create them. From the moment the band released Ultramega OK in 1988, it was clear this was not simply another hard rock group. Cornell’s soaring vocals, filled with both fury and fragility, sounded unlike anything else.

By the time Badmotorfinger arrived in 1991, Soundgarden had become a force of nature. Songs including “Outshined” and “Rusty Cage” introduced the band to a wider audience while redefining what heavy music could sound like. Then came Superunknown, the album that propelled Cornell and Soundgarden into rock history. “Black Hole Sun,” “Fell on Black Days,” and “The Day I Tried to Live” combined thunderous arrangements with dark, poetic, and deeply introspective lyrics.

After Soundgarden disbanded in 1997, Cornell did not slow down. His first solo album, originally released as Euphoria Morning in 1999 and later restored to his intended title, Euphoria Mourning, moved away from the heaviness of his earlier work and embraced bluesy, melancholic melodies. “Can’t Change Me” revealed a side of his artistry that did not require the roar of a full band to carry the same emotional weight.

Reinvention remained central to Cornell’s career. In 2001, he joined Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk to form Audioslave. Songs including “Cochise,” “Like a Stone,” and “Show Me How to Live” placed Cornell’s voice against the powerful instrumental foundation created by three members of Rage Against the Machine.

Cornell’s solo work continued evolving through Carry On in 2007, Scream in 2009, and Higher Truth in 2015. Carry On included his radically reimagined version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” while Scream, produced with Timbaland, demonstrated his willingness to take creative risks. Higher Truth returned to the soul-baring acoustic songwriting that had always been at the center of his music.

His work also reached far beyond conventional albums. Cornell wrote “You Know My Name” for the James Bond film Casino Royale, contributed “The Keeper” to Machine Gun Preacher, and recorded “The Promise” for the film about the Armenian genocide. His collaborations included recordings with Alice Cooper, Santana, Slash, Zac Brown Band, Joy Williams, and numerous other artists.

After Cornell’s death in 2017, his estate continued carefully expanding his official catalog. The 2018 career retrospective Chris Cornell introduced “When Bad Does Good,” while No One Sings Like You Anymore, Vol. 1 collected ten cover songs Cornell had selected, sequenced, and recorded in 2016. In 2026, Carry On received an expanded reissue containing “Today,” “Roads We Choose,” and an extended introduction to “Billie Jean.”

Outside music, Cornell used his platform to advocate for human rights and support vulnerable children through the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation. His impact was felt not only in his music but also in the lives he worked to help.
