Robert Plant’s solo career began in earnest after the end of Led Zeppelin, but it never felt like a man trying to recreate the past. Born on August 20, 1948, in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, and raised in the Black Country area of England, Plant had already established himself as one of rock’s most recognizable singers before turning to solo work. Once he stepped out on his own, he used that freedom to push beyond hard rock, drawing from blues, folk, world music, Americana, and roots traditions. That willingness to keep moving is what defines his solo history more than anything else.
His first solo studio album, Pictures at Eleven, arrived in 1982 and reached the Top Ten in both the United Kingdom and the United States. It introduced a new phase in his career with songs such as “Burning Down One Side” and “Pledge Pin.” He followed it with The Principle of Moments in 1983, a record that became one of his most successful solo albums and included “Big Log,” one of his best-known solo songs. That single became a major hit and helped establish Plant as a credible solo artist rather than simply a former frontman from a legendary band. He kept the momentum going with Shaken ’n’ Stirred in 1985, continuing to reshape his sound instead of settling into familiar formulas.
By the late 1980s and early 1990s, Plant’s solo catalog had become substantial and commercially consistent. Now and Zen, released in 1988, gave him another major success and included the singles “Heaven Knows,” “Tall Cool One,” and “Ship of Fools.” The album performed strongly in the marketplace and remains one of the key titles in his solo discography. He followed that with Manic Nirvana in 1990, which included “Hurting Kind (I’ve Got My Eyes on You),” and then Fate of Nations in 1993, a record that showed how broad his musical interests had become. Those albums made it clear that his solo work was not built around nostalgia. He was still writing, recording, and shifting direction with purpose.
Plant’s next major solo chapter came after his 1990s collaborations and reunions had run their course. He returned with Dreamland in 2002, an album of reinterpretations that reflected his deep interest in older songs and neglected material. In 2005, he released Mighty ReArranger with the Strange Sensation, a record that pushed further into global influences and more adventurous textures. He continued with Band of Joy in 2010, reviving the name of one of his pre-Led Zeppelin groups, and then issued Lullaby and… The Ceaseless Roar in 2014, followed by Carry Fire in 2017. Across his solo career, he has released eleven solo studio albums, building one of the deepest post-punk band catalogs of any major rock singer of his era.
His biggest solo hits came from several different phases of that run. “Big Log” remains one of the signature songs of his solo years, while “Heaven Knows,” “Tall Cool One,” “Ship of Fools,” “Hurting Kind (I’ve Got My Eyes on You),” and “29 Palms” all helped keep him visible on radio and video outlets. Plant never chased one fixed commercial sound, so his solo chart profile was spread across different albums rather than concentrated in one short burst. That is one reason he has remained so respected. Listeners never had the sense that he was coasting. Each record reflected a different set of interests, and each phase carried its own musical identity.
Awards and recognition followed him well into his solo years. As a solo artist and collaborator, he received multiple Grammy Awards, including recognition for later work with Alison Krauss. He was also appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2009 for services to music. Beyond formal honors, his solo albums regularly received strong critical response, especially the later records that showed how comfortably he could move between rock, roots, and traditional forms. That sustained credibility is a major reason he remains so admired. He was never content to live off an old reputation when he could keep building a new body of work.
Outside of music, Plant’s interests have remained closely tied to the culture that shaped him. He has long been associated with Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club and has served as the club’s vice president, a role that reflects his deep connection to the Midlands. He has also taken part in charitable work, including involvement with the ABC Trust, which supports children in Brazil. Those efforts, along with a solo catalog that kept expanding rather than repeating itself, help explain why his post Zeppelin career still matters. Robert Plant’s solo history is the story of a singer who refused to become a museum piece, choosing instead to keep searching for new songs, new sounds, and new ways to use one of the most distinctive voices in rock music.
This is a complete discography of Robert Plant’s musical career in his post Led Zeppelin years. It includes his solo albums as well as musical collaborations with other artists, including Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Alison Krauss.
