A Day to Remember formed in 2003 in Ocala, Florida, when vocalist Jeremy McKinnon, guitarists Tom Denney and Neil Westfall, bassist Joshua Woodard, and drummer Bobby Scruggs united with the goal of blending pop-punk melodies with the heaviness of metalcore. Their early DIY ethos led to the release of their debut album And Their Name Was Treason in 2005 through Indianola Records. After gaining traction in the underground scene, they signed with Victory Records and replaced Scruggs with drummer Alex Shelnutt. In 2007, they released For Those Who Have Heart, a defining moment that marked their transition from regional upstarts to national contenders in the alternative scene.

The momentum continued with Homesick in 2009, which became a breakthrough release and a fan favorite. Featuring anthemic tracks like “The Downfall of Us All” and “If It Means a Lot to You,” the album balanced melody with aggression and charted on the Billboard 200. During the album’s touring cycle, founding guitarist Tom Denney departed and was replaced by Kevin Skaff. The new lineup carried the band through the release of What Separates Me from You in 2010, which included hits like “All I Want” and “It’s Complicated.” The album solidified their reputation for crafting emotionally resonant songs with crossover appeal, reaching both post-hardcore and pop-punk audiences.

Legal troubles began to cloud the band’s next chapter, as they entered into a long-running lawsuit with Victory Records over contractual disputes. In the midst of the battle, A Day to Remember released Common Courtesy independently in 2013, asserting their autonomy as artists. The album was critically and commercially successful, praised for its maturity and for singles like “Right Back at It Again.” The release marked a turning point, not only musically, but in the band’s ability to navigate the industry on their own terms.

In 2016, the band returned with Bad Vibrations, their sixth studio album. The record showed a rawer, heavier sound, reflective of their frustration and the emotional strain of years of legal battles. Songs like “Paranoia” and “Naivety” captured a blend of urgency and introspection, and the album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. In 2021, A Day to Remember released You’re Welcome under Fueled by Ramen, further expanding their musical boundaries. This album incorporated poppier elements and electronic textures, a stylistic pivot that divided fans but showcased the band’s willingness to evolve.

Their latest release, Big Ole Album Vol. 1, dropped in February 2025 and signals a new creative era. While full details surrounding the new record’s themes and direction are still unfolding, its release continues the band’s commitment to consistent output and musical experimentation. Over the course of their career, they’ve released eight studio albums, each one contributing to a catalog defined by genre-blending risk-taking and raw lyrical honesty.

A Day to Remember’s live performances have become a hallmark of their success, with high-energy sets that draw from every era of their career. They’ve performed at major festivals, headlined worldwide tours, and curated their own touring festival, Self Help Fest, which showcased a wide range of heavy and alternative acts and became a major event for their fanbase. The band’s ability to maintain a strong connection with their audience—through their lyrics, performances, and DIY roots—has been key to their longevity.

Though awards and chart positions have followed them, what makes A Day to Remember so admired is their steadfast refusal to fit into a mold. They have earned recognition from outlets like Alternative Press and have seen multiple records chart highly, but their true impact lies in their cross-generational appeal and the way they’ve navigated the music industry without ever losing sight of the fans who helped build them from the ground up.
