Incubus first took shape in Calabasas, California, in 1991, when vocalist Brandon Boyd, guitarist Mike Einziger, and drummer José Pasillas, who had been classmates, came together through a shared passion for creating music. Bassist Alex Katunich and turntablist Gavin Koppel later completed the early lineup. The band quickly gained local recognition for dynamic performances and a restless fusion of alternative rock, funk, metal, hip-hop, and experimental sounds.

The independently released Fungus Amongus introduced Incubus in 1995, while the Enjoy Incubus EP and the major-label album S.C.I.E.N.C.E. expanded the group’s audience in 1997. Those releases captured the band at its most aggressive and unpredictable, combining heavy riffs, slap bass, turntables, jazz-inflected passages, and Brandon Boyd’s rapidly developing vocal style.

The breakthrough arrived with Make Yourself in 1999. “Pardon Me,” “Stellar,” and “Drive” gave Incubus a much larger audience without reducing the band to a single sound. Morning View followed in 2001 with “Wish You Were Here,” “Nice to Know You,” “Warning,” and “Are You In?” The album’s spacious arrangements and emotional directness made it one of the defining releases of the band’s career.

Incubus continued changing shape through A Crow Left of the Murder…, Light Grenades, If Not Now, When?, and 8. Songs including “Megalomaniac,” “Anna Molly,” “Dig,” “Adolescents,” and “Nimble Bastard” demonstrated how easily the group could move between muscular rock, melodic pop, atmospheric experimentation, and introspective songwriting.

The catalog also extends beyond the eight original studio albums. Incubus recorded soundtrack material for Spawn, Halo 2, and Stealth; released the Trust Fall EPs; and gathered B-sides and rarities on Monuments and Melodies. In 2024, the band revisited its landmark fourth album with Morning View XXIII, a complete re-recording created with bassist Nicole Row.

Incubus has earned lasting respect through its willingness to evolve without abandoning the emotional honesty at the center of its music. Boyd’s lyrics often balance vulnerability, curiosity, frustration, and hope, while Einziger, Pasillas, Chris Kilmore, and the band’s bassists have continually reshaped the musical setting around those ideas.

Beyond music, Incubus established the Make Yourself Foundation in 2003 to support environmental, educational, artistic, and humanitarian causes. The organization reflects the same sense of connection that has long defined the relationship between the band and its audience.

Incubus remains active with Boyd, Einziger, Pasillas, Kilmore, and Row. The group has continued performing, revisiting earlier work, and developing new music while preserving the unpredictable character that made its catalog distinctive from the beginning.
