? and the Mysterians emerged from Bay City and Saginaw, Michigan, with one of the most instantly recognizable sounds of the 1960s. Their blend of garage rock, rhythm and blues, electric organ, and Question Mark’s defiant vocals helped create a musical language later associated with proto-punk and punk rock.

The group’s beginnings reached back to 1962, when guitarist Larry Borjas, drummer Robert Martinez, and guitarist Bobby Balderrama began playing together. Rudy Martinez, who adopted the name Question Mark, later became the frontman. Frank Rodriguez’s organ playing proved essential to the band’s sound, while Frank Lugo and Eddie Serrato completed the lineup that recorded its breakthrough hit.

The band’s name was inspired by the 1957 Japanese science fiction film The Mysterians. Question Mark added an elaborate mythology of his own, presenting himself as an ageless figure connected to Mars and building a stage persona that was unlike anything else in American rock.

“96 Tears” was recorded in Bay City in March 1966 and first released on the small Pa-Go-Go label before Cameo-Parkway distributed it nationally. Its hypnotic organ riff, spare arrangement, and emotionally charged vocal carried the single to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 29, 1966.

The debut album, 96 Tears, followed later that year. It included “I Need Somebody,” “Stormy Monday,” “You’re Telling Me Lies,” “Ten O’Clock,” “Set Aside,” “Up Side,” and the title track. “I Need Somebody” reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the group a second substantial national hit.

Action arrived in June 1967 with “Girl (You Captivate Me),” “Can’t Get Enough of You, Baby,” “Got To,” “I’ll Be Back,” “Smokes,” and “Do You Feel It.” “Can’t Get Enough of You, Baby” reached number 56, while “Girl (You Captivate Me)” reached number 98.

After leaving Cameo-Parkway, the band recorded singles for Capitol, Tangerine, Super K, Chicory, and Luv. Those releases included “Make You Mine,” “Ain’t It a Shame,” “Sha La La,” “Talk Is Cheap,” “She Goes to Church on Sunday,” “Hot ‘n’ Groovin’,” and “Funky Lady.” Bassist Mel Schacher, who later joined Grand Funk Railroad, briefly played with the group during this changing period.

Rock critic Dave Marsh used the phrase “punk-rock” while writing about a ? and the Mysterians reunion in a 1971 issue of Creem. The description helped connect the band’s stripped-down attack and confrontational style to the punk movement that would emerge more fully later in the decade.

The original musicians reunited several times. A 1984 Dallas performance was released as 96 Tears Forever: The Dallas ReUnion Tapes. The group re-recorded much of its early catalog for the self-titled 1997 album Question Mark & the Mysterians, followed by the live album Do You Feel It Baby? in 1998 and the studio collection More Action in 1999.

The 2020 collection We Are Not Alone: Rarities 1968–1970 brought together later singles and acetate recordings from the years after the Cameo-Parkway albums. In 2026, the remaining original core members announced a Bay City farewell performance celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of “96 Tears.”

Across six decades, ? and the Mysterians have remained a foundational American garage-rock band. Their influence reached punk, new wave, alternative rock, and generations of musicians who recognized that a simple organ line, a direct beat, and an unforgettable vocal attitude could change rock history.
