Formed in Halmstad, Sweden, in 1995, Arch Enemy became one of the defining bands in melodic death metal. Guitarist Michael Amott created the group after his work with Carcass, reconnecting with former Carnage vocalist Johan Liiva and recruiting his younger brother Christopher Amott and drummer Daniel Erlandsson for the recording of the debut album, Black Earth.

Arch Enemy has released twelve studio albums, beginning with Black Earth in 1996 and continuing through Blood Dynasty in 2025. The band built its sound around aggressive vocals, tightly constructed riffs, expressive solos, and twin-guitar harmonies that drew equally from death metal and traditional heavy metal.

The group experienced several major lineup transitions while remaining under Michael Amott’s leadership. Johan Liiva fronted the first three albums, followed by Angela Gossow from 2000 through 2014 and Alissa White-Gluz from 2014 through 2025. Lauren Hart joined as Arch Enemy’s fourth lead vocalist in 2026, beginning a new period with the single “To the Last Breath.”

Arch Enemy’s international profile grew steadily through albums including Wages of Sin, Doomsday Machine, Rise of the Tyrant, Khaos Legions, and War Eternal. War Eternal reached number 44 on the Billboard 200 in 2014, becoming the band’s highest-charting album in the United States. The current lineup consists of Michael Amott, Lauren Hart, Sharlee D’Angelo, Daniel Erlandsson, and Joey Concepcion.

Current Members

Michael Amott

Michael Amott was born on July 28, 1970, and is Arch Enemy’s founder, principal songwriter, and lead guitarist. Before forming the band, he co-founded Carnage with Johan Liiva and later joined Carcass, contributing to Necroticism – Descanting the Insalubrious and Heartwork.

Amott formed Arch Enemy in 1995 to continue developing a style that combined death metal aggression with melodic guitar writing. He wrote the material for Black Earth and also recorded the bass parts, although Johan Liiva was listed as the bassist in the original credits.

Amott has appeared on every Arch Enemy studio album. His guitar playing and songwriting established the band’s signature combination of harmonized leads, fast rhythmic passages, memorable melodic themes, and solos influenced by classic heavy metal and hard rock.

His work can be heard on songs including “Bury Me an Angel,” “The Immortal,” “Ravenous,” “We Will Rise,” “Nemesis,” “Revolution Begins,” “War Eternal,” “The World Is Yours,” “Handshake with Hell,” and “Dream Stealer.”

Outside Arch Enemy, Amott founded the stoner rock and hard rock band Spiritual Beggars. His other work has included Carnage, Carcass, Candlemass, and the Black Earth project, which reunited musicians from Arch Enemy’s early albums.

Lauren Hart

Lauren Hart joined Arch Enemy as lead vocalist in 2026, replacing Alissa White-Gluz. Hart had previously established herself as the vocalist of Once Human, the melodic death metal band formed with guitarist Logan Mader.

Arch Enemy introduced Hart as its new frontwoman on February 19, 2026, with the release of “To the Last Breath.” The song began the band’s first recording period following the Blood Dynasty cycle and presented a heavier vocal approach that connected naturally with Arch Enemy’s established melodic death metal sound.

Hart performed her first concert with Arch Enemy on March 27, 2026, in Beijing. The set included material from each major period of the band’s catalog as well as the live debut of “To the Last Breath.”

Her arrival created the fourth distinct vocal era in Arch Enemy’s history, following Johan Liiva, Angela Gossow, and Alissa White-Gluz. Hart remains the vocalist in the current lineup.

Sharlee D’Angelo

Sharlee D’Angelo, born Charles Petter Andreason on March 27, 1973, joined Arch Enemy in 1999. He became the band’s permanent bassist during the period surrounding Burning Bridges, replacing Martin Bengtsson.

D’Angelo has appeared on every Arch Enemy studio album from Burning Bridges through Blood Dynasty. His bass playing provides weight beneath the twin guitars while maintaining the precision required by the band’s fast and highly arranged material.

He remained a central member through the vocal eras of Johan Liiva, Angela Gossow, Alissa White-Gluz, and Lauren Hart. His long tenure makes him the second-longest-serving continuous member after Michael Amott.

Outside Arch Enemy, D’Angelo has performed with Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Dismember, Witchery, Spiritual Beggars, and the Night Flight Orchestra. He also participated in the Black Earth reunion project.

Daniel Erlandsson

Daniel Erlandsson was born on May 22, 1976, in Malmö, Sweden. He recorded drums on Arch Enemy’s debut album, Black Earth, before Peter Wildoer played on Stigmata. Erlandsson returned for Burning Bridges and has remained the band’s drummer ever since.

His drumming combines speed, precision, blast beats, double-bass patterns, and carefully arranged fills. Erlandsson has also participated in songwriting, arranging, keyboard work, engineering, and production on later Arch Enemy albums.

He has performed on eleven of the band’s twelve studio albums, appearing on every release except Stigmata. His long partnership with Michael Amott and Sharlee D’Angelo has provided continuity through repeated vocalist and guitarist changes.

Erlandsson’s other credits include Eucharist, Armageddon, Brujeria, and session work with In Flames. He also joined the Black Earth project celebrating Arch Enemy’s original era.

Joey Concepcion

Joey Concepcion officially joined Arch Enemy in December 2023 after Jeff Loomis left the band. Concepcion had already performed with Arch Enemy as a substitute guitarist during festival appearances in 2018, giving him prior experience with the group’s catalog and live arrangements.

Before joining Arch Enemy, Concepcion performed with bands including The Absence and Armageddon. His technically precise lead playing and familiarity with melodic death metal made him a natural partner for Michael Amott’s guitar style.

Concepcion made his first tour as an official member during the final portion of the Deceivers cycle. His recording debut came on Blood Dynasty, where he contributed electric and acoustic guitar parts and solos.

He remained with the group through the transition from Alissa White-Gluz to Lauren Hart and appears in the current Arch Enemy lineup.

Christopher Amott

Christopher Amott was born on November 23, 1977, in Halmstad, Sweden. He joined the founding recording lineup of Arch Enemy as the second guitarist alongside his older brother Michael Amott.

Christopher appeared on Black Earth, Stigmata, Burning Bridges, Wages of Sin, Anthems of Rebellion, and Doomsday Machine. His technically advanced lead playing and classical influence helped establish the twin-guitar character that became central to the band’s identity.

He left after the recording of Doomsday Machine in 2005 and returned in 2007. During his second tenure, he performed on Rise of the Tyrant, The Root of All Evil, and Khaos Legions before departing again in 2012.

Outside Arch Enemy, Christopher founded Armageddon and released solo recordings including Follow Your Heart and Electric Twilight. He later performed with Dark Tranquillity and participated in the Black Earth reunion project with Arch Enemy’s early members.

Johan Liiva

Johan Liiva was born on November 18, 1970, and was Arch Enemy’s original lead vocalist. His musical connection with Michael Amott began in Carnage before the two reunited to form Arch Enemy in 1995.

Liiva sang on Black Earth, Stigmata, and Burning Bridges. His harsh vocal style helped define the band’s original sound while the music developed its combination of death metal intensity and melodic guitar harmonies.

He left Arch Enemy in 2000 and was replaced by Angela Gossow. Liiva continued performing with projects including NonExist and Hearse.

Liiva reunited with Arch Enemy for a guest appearance at Japan’s Loud Park Festival in 2015. That performance led to the Black Earth project, which brought together members associated with the band’s first three albums.

Martin Bengtsson

Martin Bengtsson joined Arch Enemy as bassist during the recording of Stigmata. His tenure came after Michael Amott had recorded the bass parts on Black Earth and before Sharlee D’Angelo established the band’s long-term rhythm section.

Bengtsson performed on Stigmata, released in 1998. The album expanded Arch Enemy’s audience outside Japan and marked the band’s move to Century Media Records.

He left before the recording of Burning Bridges. Although his time with Arch Enemy was brief, he was part of the lineup that transformed the original project into a more conventional touring and recording band.

Peter Wildoer

Peter Wildoer played drums on Arch Enemy’s second studio album, Stigmata. He entered after Daniel Erlandsson’s work on Black Earth and contributed to the more polished and technically expansive sound of the 1998 release.

Wildoer’s tenure ended before Burning Bridges, when Erlandsson returned as the permanent drummer. Wildoer continued building a respected career with Darkane and numerous studio and touring projects.

Angela Gossow

Angela Gossow was born on November 5, 1974, in Cologne, Germany. She joined Arch Enemy in 2000 after previously fronting the bands Asmodina and Mistress.

Gossow had interviewed Michael Amott for a German web publication and gave him a recording of her vocals. When Arch Enemy decided to replace Johan Liiva, she auditioned and became the band’s new lead singer.

Her recording debut came on Wages of Sin. She also appeared on Anthems of Rebellion, Doomsday Machine, Rise of the Tyrant, The Root of All Evil, and Khaos Legions.

Gossow’s forceful growls and commanding live performances helped Arch Enemy reach a much larger international audience. She became one of extreme metal’s most visible female vocalists and played a major role in the band’s expansion through the 2000s.

She stepped down as vocalist in 2014 and recommended Alissa White-Gluz as her successor. Gossow remained closely connected to Arch Enemy as its manager and continued working in artist management.

Fredrik Åkesson

Fredrik Åkesson joined Arch Enemy as a touring guitarist in 2005 after Christopher Amott’s first departure. Gus G. initially filled the position for selected concerts before Åkesson became the band’s principal second guitarist on the road.

Åkesson performed with Arch Enemy through 2007 and appeared on the Live Apocalypse video release. He left when Christopher Amott returned to the band.

Åkesson later joined Opeth and became an important member of that group’s progressive metal and progressive rock periods. His other credits include Talisman, Krux, Southpaw, and Spiritual Beggars.

Nick Cordle

Nick Cordle joined Arch Enemy in 2012 after Christopher Amott’s second departure. Before Arch Enemy, Cordle was known for his work with the American technical melodic death metal band Arsis.

Cordle performed on War Eternal, the first Arch Enemy album featuring Alissa White-Gluz. His technical guitar work complemented Michael Amott’s writing during one of the band’s most important lineup transitions.

He left during the 2014 North American tour. Christopher Amott temporarily returned to complete several performances before Jeff Loomis became the permanent replacement.

After Arch Enemy, Cordle continued working as a guitarist, songwriter, and producer and later performed with Omnium Gatherum.

Jeff Loomis

Jeff Loomis was born on September 14, 1971, and joined Arch Enemy in November 2014. He had previously spent nearly two decades as the guitarist and principal composer of Nevermore.

Loomis toured extensively with Arch Enemy and appeared on Will to Power and Deceivers. He also contributed solos to bonus material associated with Blood Dynasty.

Although Michael Amott remained the band’s principal songwriter, Loomis brought a recognizable neoclassical and progressive-metal lead style to Arch Enemy’s recordings and concerts.

Loomis left amicably at the end of 2023 to begin another chapter in his career. His other work includes solo albums and the project Conquering Dystopia with Keith Merrow.

Alissa White-Gluz

Alissa White-Gluz was born on July 31, 1985, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She joined Arch Enemy in 2014 after establishing herself as the vocalist of The Agonist.

Angela Gossow personally recommended White-Gluz when she decided to step away from performing. White-Gluz made her Arch Enemy debut on War Eternal, which reached number 44 on the Billboard 200.

She also appeared on Will to Power, Deceivers, and Blood Dynasty. Her ability to combine harsh vocals with clean singing expanded the band’s vocal palette on songs including “Reason to Believe,” “Handshake with Hell,” and the French-language cover “Vivre Libre.”

White-Gluz left Arch Enemy in November 2025 after approximately eleven years with the band. Her tenure included extensive worldwide touring and four studio albums, ending with the Blood Dynasty cycle.

Following her departure, she continued developing solo and collaborative work outside Arch Enemy.

Touring Members

Dick Lövgren

Dick Lövgren briefly filled in on bass during the touring cycle for Burning Bridges when Sharlee D’Angelo was unavailable.

Lövgren later became best known as the bassist of Meshuggah. His time with Arch Enemy was limited to live performances and did not include a studio album.

Roger Nilsson

Roger Nilsson also served as a touring bassist during the Burning Bridges period. He helped the band complete performances while D’Angelo was temporarily absent.

Nilsson’s other credits include The Quill, Spiritual Beggars, and Firebird.

Gus G.

Gus G., born Konstantinos Karamitroudis, briefly performed with Arch Enemy in 2005 after Christopher Amott left the band.

His tenure consisted of selected live appearances before Fredrik Åkesson assumed the touring-guitar position. Gus G. later became widely known for Firewind and for performing with Ozzy Osbourne.
