Alba Farelo Solé, professionally known as Bad Gyal, was born in Vilassar de Mar, Catalonia, Spain, in 1997. She first gained attention in 2016 by uploading a Catalan-language cover of Rihanna’s “Work” titled “Pai,” which rapidly went viral on YouTube and social media platforms. This early momentum propelled her into the spotlight and established the foundation for her entrance into the Spanish urban and dancehall music scenes.
Later in 2016, Bad Gyal released her debut mixtape, Slow Wine Mixtape. This project included the standout tracks “Indapanden” and “No Pierdo Nada,” and showcased her distinctive style—a blend of dancehall, trap, and reggaeton, with lyrics in Catalan, Spanish, and English. Building on this success, she performed at numerous local venues and quickly became recognized for her energetic stage presence.
In February 2018, Bad Gyal dropped her second mixtape, Worldwide Angel, expanding her international appeal. The project was recorded in cities like London, Barcelona, and Miami, and featured collaborations with a range of producers such as Jam City, Florentino, Fakeguido, and DJ Florentino. Songs like “Blink,” “Candela,” and “Internationally” underscored her willingness to experiment with sounds and genres, earning her critical acclaim and an expanding fanbase beyond Spain.
Following the mixtapes, Bad Gyal released a series of singles that further cemented her reputation in the Spanish music industry. Tracks such as “Fiebre,” “Hookah,” “Santa María” (featuring Busy Signal), and “Zorra” (with Rauw Alejandro) achieved significant streaming numbers and radio play. “Hookah” and “Santa María” were both certified gold in Spain, while “Zorra” achieved platinum status. During this period, her music videos regularly amassed millions of views on YouTube, further solidifying her status as a leader in Spanish urban music.
2020 marked another major milestone with the release of “Alocao,” a collaboration with Omar Montes. The single quickly soared to number one on the Spanish Singles Chart and was certified four times platinum. That same year, “Zorra” and “Aprendiendo el Sexo” were both certified multi-platinum, reflecting her broad commercial success. Bad Gyal continued to collaborate with top names in the genre, including Khea, Juanka, and Rema, broadening her international reach.
In March 2021, Bad Gyal unveiled the Warm Up EP, featuring tracks such as “Pussy,” “Judas,” and “44” (featuring Rema). The EP debuted at number three on the Spanish Albums Chart and was noted for its diverse production and guest appearances, including Khea and Juanka. Warm Up demonstrated her versatility, blending reggaeton, trap, and dancehall in both Spanish and English.
Bad Gyal’s highly anticipated debut studio album, La Joia, arrived in January 2024. The album features collaborations with artists like Tokischa, Ñengo Flow, Morad, and Myke Towers. Singles including “Chulo,” “Mi Lova,” “Perdió Este Culo,” and “Bota Niña” received widespread acclaim and strong chart performance. “Chulo,” in particular, reached the top ten in Spain and achieved multi-platinum certification. La Joia solidified her position as a major force in the Spanish and Latin music markets.
Her live performances have included appearances at major festivals such as Primavera Sound and Sónar, as well as tours across Spain, Europe, and Latin America. Bad Gyal is also recognized for her distinctive visual style and fashion sense, which have led to collaborations with brands and designers for advertising and promotional campaigns.
Throughout her career, Bad Gyal has accumulated a series of awards and nominations. Notably, she received the Premio MIN for Best Urban Recording in 2019 for “Internationally” and won the Onda Cero Music Award for Best Artist. She has been nominated at the 40 Principales Awards and LOS40 Music Awards, further highlighting her impact in the industry.
Bad Gyal’s discography includes one studio album, La Joia (2024), three extended plays—Slow Wine Mixtape (2016), Worldwide Angel (2018), and Warm Up (2021)—and an extensive list of hit singles and collaborations. Her work is marked by a consistent presence on Spanish and international charts, with certifications for gold and platinum sales on multiple releases.
Her success is not limited to music. Bad Gyal’s influence is seen in her participation in fashion campaigns and as a model for major international brands. She has continued to push boundaries in the reggaeton, dancehall, and Latin trap genres, often highlighting her multilingual and multicultural background.
