Barry Manilow’s story is rooted in New York City, where he grew up in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood and graduated from Eastern District High School. He was born Barry Alan Pincus in 1943, and his family history on the page includes Irish and Jewish ancestry, as well as the name change to Manilow before his bar mitzvah. In college, he attended the City College of New York and then the New York College of Music, and he worked at CBS while studying. He later studied musical theater at Juilliard, which positioned him to move comfortably between pop songwriting, arranging, and large-scale stage and television work.

His first real foothold in the business came from writing and arranging, not from being a front-line recording star. In 1964, he wrote an original score for the Off-Broadway show The Drunkard, which ran for eight years at the 13th Street Repertory Theatre. During the rest of the 1960s, he worked as a commercial jingle writer and singer, performing in ads for State Farm Insurance and Band-Aid, and singing in campaigns for Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pepsi, McDonald’s, and Dr Pepper. That era later earned him an Honorary Clio in 2009, reflecting the centrality of his advertising work to his early professional identity. He also served as a musical director for WCBS-TV and did arranging for Ed Sullivan’s production company, while continuing to write, produce, and perform for radio and television.

The shift into recording artist momentum happened across the early 1970s, when he worked with Tony Orlando and cut tracks under the name Featherbed, including an early version of “Could It Be Magic.” At the same time, Bette Midler brought him into her world in 1971, first as her pianist at the Continental Baths, then as producer on her first two albums, The Divine Miss M and Bette Midler, and as musical director on the tour for her debut. His own breakthrough single was “Mandy,” and his catalog of defining hits on the page also includes “I Write the Songs,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” “Weekend in New England,” “Looks Like We Made It,” and “Copacabana (At the Copa).” The biography also notes that some of his biggest commercial successes were songs written by other writers, and it names examples including “Tryin’ to Get the Feeling Again,” “Weekend in New England,” “Ships,” “Looks Like We Made It,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” and “Ready to Take a Chance Again.”

What keeps his career easy to quantify is how consistently it has performed on adult contemporary radio and in album sales. The page says he has recorded and released fifty-one Top forty singles on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart, including thirteen that hit number one, twenty-eight that reached the Top ten, and thirty-six that made the Top twenty. It also credits him with 13 platinum and six multi-platinum albums, and places his worldwide solo record sales at more than 85 million. In the 1970s and into the 1980s, ABC aired multiple variety television specials starring him, and the page records major television recognition, including an Emmy for The Barry Manilow Special and another Emmy win later for Barry Manilow: Music and Passion. Live performance remained a major pillar, including a ten night run at Radio City Music Hall in 1984 that the page describes as a box office record for the venue at the time.

His album output is extensive and spans decades, with the page listing thirty studio albums from Barry Manilow through This Is My Town: Songs of New York, along with multiple live albums and large-scale compilation projects. In the 2000s, he became a long-running Las Vegas headliner, beginning with a residency at the Las Vegas Hilton in 2005, and he used PBS specials as a significant platform in that era. A key commercial milestone in the biography is The Greatest Songs of the Fifties, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2006, described as his first number one album on the chart and his first to reach number one in 29 years.

In the 2010s and 2020s, the page points to ongoing activity, including hosting the BBC Radio 2 documentary series They Write the Songs beginning in 2011, releasing Night Songs in 2014, releasing Night Songs II in 2020, launching “The Hits Come Home” at the Westgate Hotel in Las Vegas in 2021, and appearing in an NBC Christmas special in 2023. It also notes a 2025 single, “Once Before I Go,” presented as coming from a forthcoming album titled What a Time.

Outside of music releases and touring, the page gives concrete, named examples of fundraising and charitable activity, tied to specific events and organizations. After Hurricane Hugo in 1989, he staged a benefit concert at the University of South Carolina’s Carolina Coliseum and presented checks to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. In 2005, it says donations made by fans to the American Red Cross through the Manilow Fund for Health and Hope were personally matched by Manilow and by the fund itself, tripling the original donations, with $150,000 delivered to the American Red Cross in forty-eight hours.

In 2011, his Manilow Music Project contributed $300,000 to restore a school music program and instruments in Joplin, Missouri, after a tornado. On the awards side, the page lists an Emmy in 1977, a Special Tony Award in 1977, American Music Awards for Favorite Pop Rock Male Artist in 1978, 1979, and 1980, a Grammy in 1978 for “Copacabana,” a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1980, induction into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2002, and later honors including a Society of Singers Lifetime Achievement Award and an Honorary Clio for his 1960s advertising work.
