Carole King was born Carol Joan Klein in Manhattan and raised in Brooklyn, New York. A pianist from childhood, she began writing songs as a teenager and studied at Queens College, where she met lyricist Gerry Goffin. King and Goffin married in 1959 and became one of the most successful songwriting partnerships associated with New York’s Brill Building era.
Their early hits included “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” recorded by the Shirelles, “Take Good Care of My Baby” by Bobby Vee, “The Loco-Motion” by Little Eva, and “Up on the Roof” by the Drifters. King also released several singles under her own name before joining Danny Kortchmar and Charles Larkey in the City, whose album Now That Everything’s Been Said appeared in 1968.
King began her solo album career with Writer in 1970. Her second album, Tapestry, followed in February 1971 and transformed her into one of the leading singer-songwriters of the decade. The album included “I Feel the Earth Move,” “It’s Too Late,” “So Far Away,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Beautiful,” and King’s own recordings of “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”
Tapestry earned four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year for “It’s Too Late,” and Song of the Year for “You’ve Got a Friend.” King followed it with Music, Rhymes & Reasons, Fantasy, and Wrap Around Joy. “Sweet Seasons,” “Been to Canaan,” “Jazzman,” and “Nightingale” extended her run of major solo recordings.
In 1975, King composed and performed the songs for Really Rosie, the animated television special based on stories by Maurice Sendak. She continued recording through the end of the decade with Thoroughbred, Simple Things, Welcome Home, and Touch the Sky.
King revisited songs from the Goffin-King catalog on Pearls: Songs of Goffin and King in 1980. Her subsequent albums included One to One, Speeding Time, City Streets, and Colour of Your Dreams. She returned with Love Makes the World in 2001, an album featuring collaborations with artists including Babyface, Celine Dion, k.d. lang, and Steven Tyler.
King released her first holiday studio album, A Holiday Carole, in 2011. The Legendary Demos followed in 2012, collecting King’s demonstration recordings of songs she wrote for herself and other performers. Later archival releases included Live at Montreux 1973 and Home Again, documenting important concerts from her 1970s career.
Her later recording activity included “One (2018),” the 2021 digital release of “Out in the Cold,” the A Christmas Carole EP, and the 2024 Glen Campbell duet “There’s No Me Without You.” The holiday EP was promoted again as a digital release in 2025 with three recordings from the A Holiday Carole sessions.
King has won four Grammy Awards and received the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame with Gerry Goffin, entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a songwriter in 1990, and was inducted again as a solo performer in 2021. Her honors also include the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song and the Kennedy Center Honors.
