Crazy Town was an American rap rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1995 by Bret Mazur and Seth Binzer, who was better known by his stage name, Shifty Shellshock. The band is best known for its 2000 single “Butterfly,” which reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 2001. Crazy Town’s music combined elements of hip hop, rock, and pop, which contributed to the band’s quick rise to fame in the early 2000s. Their debut album, The Gift of Game, released in 1999, achieved platinum status, driven largely by the success of “Butterfly.” Following their initial success, the band released a follow-up album, Darkhorse, in 2002, which did not achieve the same level of commercial success, and the band disbanded in 2003.
Crazy Town reformed in 2007 and released its third studio album, The Brimstone Sluggers, in 2015. Bret Mazur stopped touring with the band in 2017, after which Binzer began using the name Crazy Town X. The group’s final release with Binzer was the Flirting With Disaster EP in 2024. Sadly, Seth “Shifty Shellshock” Binzer died on June 24, 2024, at the age of forty-nine. His death was later ruled an accidental overdose. Crazy Town’s run as a band ended in 2024.
Shifty Shellshock
Shifty Shellshock (Seth Binzer) co-founded Crazy Town with Bret Mazur and served as the band’s lead vocalist throughout its career. His distinctive voice and dynamic performance style were crucial in defining the band’s sound. Shellshock appeared on all three Crazy Town studio albums, contributing vocals and songwriting. Outside of Crazy Town, Shifty pursued a solo career, releasing the album Happy Love Sick in 2004 and collaborating with other artists, including Paul Oakenfold on “Starry Eyed Surprise.” He also appeared on reality television programs that documented his struggles with substance abuse. Binzer died on June 24, 2024.
Bret Mazur
Bret Mazur, also known as Epic Mazur, co-founded Crazy Town and was one of the band’s primary vocalists, songwriters, producers, and multi-instrumentalists. Mazur’s background in music production and songwriting significantly shaped the band’s albums, with his work on The Gift of Game helping to craft the crossover appeal of their hit single “Butterfly.” Apart from his work with Crazy Town, Mazur has had an extensive career in music production and songwriting. He stopped touring as a member of Crazy Town in 2017.
Adam Bravin
Adam Bravin, also known as DJ Adam 12, was part of the early Brimstone Sluggers lineup that preceded Crazy Town. He handled turntables, samples, programming, and keyboards during the group’s formative period in the mid-1990s. Bravin left before Crazy Town recorded The Gift of Game. He later became widely known as one half of the band She Wants Revenge and continued working as a DJ, producer, composer, and visual artist.
Charles “Rust Epique” Lopez
Charles Lopez, better known by the stage name Rust Epique, was one of Crazy Town’s original guitarists during the The Gift of Game era. His guitar work helped bring the heavier rock side of the band’s rap-rock sound to life, and he is credited on the debut album. Rust Epique left Crazy Town before the band’s second album and later formed the group pre)Thing. He died in 2004 at the age of thirty-six.
Adam Goldstein
Adam Goldstein, known professionally as DJ AM, handled turntables, samples, programming, and keyboards for Crazy Town during the band’s breakthrough period. He was part of the lineup credited on The Gift of Game and contributed to the band’s combination of hip hop production and live rock instrumentation. After leaving Crazy Town, DJ AM became one of the best-known DJs in the United States and collaborated with artists across numerous genres. He died in 2009.
Doug Miller
Doug Miller, also known as Faydoe Deelay, played bass for Crazy Town during the band’s original commercial run. Miller was part of the lineup that recorded The Gift of Game and remained with the group through the Darkhorse era. His bass playing helped anchor Crazy Town’s mixture of hip hop rhythms and hard rock guitar arrangements.
Antonio Lorenzo Valli
Antonio Lorenzo Valli, also known as Trouble Valli, was Crazy Town’s lead guitarist during the band’s original era. Valli played on The Gift of Game and remained with the group through Darkhorse. His guitar work was an important part of the heavier instrumental side of Crazy Town’s sound.
James Bradley Jr.
James Bradley Jr., also known as JBJ, was Crazy Town’s drummer during the recording of The Gift of Game and the band’s early touring years. Bradley was an experienced professional drummer before joining the group, and his playing gave the debut album much of its live rhythmic foundation. He left the band before the Darkhorse era was completed.
Kraig Tyler
Kraig Tyler, also known as Squirrel, joined Crazy Town as a rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist during the band’s first era. Tyler became part of the touring lineup after the release of The Gift of Game and remained with Crazy Town through the Darkhorse period. His guitar work contributed to the heavier sound the group explored on its second album.
Kyle Hollinger
Kyle Hollinger served as Crazy Town’s drummer during the Darkhorse era after James Bradley Jr. left the group. Hollinger appeared with the band in performances and videos from that period and remained with Crazy Town until the original lineup dissolved in 2003.
Ahmad Alkurabi
Ahmad Alkurabi, also known as Deadsie, played guitar with Crazy Town during the band’s comeback period in the mid-2010s. His tenure came as the group returned to touring and worked toward the release of The Brimstone Sluggers.
Omar Gusmao
Omar Gusmao played guitar with Crazy Town during the group’s later comeback era, including touring activity around 2015 and 2016. His time with the band came after the release of The Brimstone Sluggers, not during the earlier Darkhorse period.
Nick “Dax” Diiorio
Nick “Dax” Diiorio joined Crazy Town as a bassist during the band’s mid-2010s comeback. A graduate of Musicians Institute, Diiorio joined in time for the group’s 2014 international touring schedule and continued performing with Crazy Town during the period surrounding The Brimstone Sluggers. He also contributed backing vocals on stage.
Kevin Kapler
Kevin Kapler played drums for Crazy Town during the band’s mid-2010s revival. He was part of the touring lineup alongside Shifty Shellshock, Nick Diiorio, Rick Dixon, and other members during the period in which the band promoted The Brimstone Sluggers.
Elias Tannous
Elias Tannous, also known as ET, joined Crazy Town as a guitarist in 2016. Tannous toured extensively with the later incarnation of the band, contributing guitar and backing vocals during the Crazy Town and Crazy Town X years. His tenure continued into the early 2020s.
Hasma Angeleno
Hasma Angeleno served as Crazy Town’s bassist and backing vocalist during the later Crazy Town X era. Angeleno joined the touring lineup in 2017 and helped provide the rhythm section for the band’s live performances through the early 2020s.
Roland Banks
Roland Banks played drums and percussion for Crazy Town during the later touring years. He joined the band during the Crazy Town X period and was part of the lineup involved in extensive live performances before the band’s final phase.
Rick Dixon
Rick Dixon, known as DJ Rick One or R1ckOne, served as Crazy Town’s DJ and turntablist during several periods of the band’s later history. His role included turntables, sampling, and electronic elements rather than sound engineering. Dixon remained part of the group’s final phase and was included in the last Crazy Town X lineup associated with Seth Binzer.
Bobby Reeves
Bobby Reeves, formerly of Adema, performed as a touring and co-vocalist with Crazy Town during the band’s later years. Reeves initially filled in when Bret Mazur was unavailable and continued appearing with Crazy Town into the 2020s. He was still performing with the group during its 2023 touring period.
Jarred Jackson
Jarred Jackson performed guitar and bass with Crazy Town during the early 2020s. He served as a touring musician during the transition between the long-running Crazy Town X lineup and the band’s final configuration.
Mark White
Mark White was a guitarist in Crazy Town’s final period and became a close creative and business collaborator with Seth Binzer. White and Binzer co-founded KrushKill Records in 2022, and White was part of the final Crazy Town X lineup that released the Flirting With Disaster EP in 2024.
Sean Heenan
Sean Heenan played drums in Crazy Town’s final lineup. He performed with the group during its last phase alongside Seth Binzer, Mark White, and DJ Rick One.
Steven “Epic” Hendricks
Steven “Epic” Hendricks was among the guitarists associated with Crazy Town’s final touring period in 2023 and 2024. His involvement came during the band’s last incarnation before Seth Binzer’s death.
Brian “Ruby” Selleck
Brian “Ruby” Selleck played bass with Crazy Town during the band’s final touring period. Selleck was part of the late lineup that appeared during 2023 and 2024.
