Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young brought together four songwriters whose voices and musical personalities reshaped American rock at the end of the 1960s. David Crosby had made his name with the Byrds, Stephen Stills had been a central figure in Buffalo Springfield, and Graham Nash had enjoyed major success with the Hollies. The three formed Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968, developing an unmistakable harmony sound that placed finely detailed acoustic arrangements alongside electric rock. Their self-titled 1969 debut introduced enduring songs such as “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Marrakesh Express,” “Guinnevere,” and “Wooden Ships.”
Neil Young joined the group in 1969, bringing his songwriting and electric guitar work into an already remarkable partnership. As Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the quartet released Déjà Vu in 1970, an album that combined the intimacy of “Our House” and “Teach Your Children” with the power of “Carry On,” “Almost Cut My Hair,” and “Woodstock.” Their single “Ohio,” written by Young in response to the Kent State shootings, gave the group one of the defining protest recordings of the era. The 1971 concert album 4 Way Street showed how effectively the musicians could move between individual performances, close vocal harmonies, and extended electric arrangements.
The four musicians did not stay together continuously. Crosby, Stills & Nash continued as a trio, releasing CSN in 1977 and Daylight Again in 1982, with songs including “Just a Song Before I Go,” “Cathedral,” “Southern Cross,” and “Wasted on the Way.” Young returned for the quartet albums American Dream in 1988 and Looking Forward in 1999. Across those years, the members also pursued solo careers and other partnerships, often bringing songs from those projects to CSN and CSNY concerts.
The group’s recorded history extends well beyond its studio albums. Official live releases capture songs that were never recorded for a CSN or CSNY studio album, while archival collections have brought early sessions, alternate arrangements, and long-unheard performances to listeners. Particularly revealing are the 2014 release CSNY 1974, the expanded Déjà Vu anniversary collection issued in 2021, and Live at Fillmore East, 1969, which arrived in 2024. They help illustrate the extraordinary range of material these musicians performed together.
This A-to-Z list covers the records issued under the Crosby, Stills & Nash and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young names, including original studio songs, qualifying non-album recordings, and distinct repertoire on official group live and archival releases. It also identifies a quartet performance issued on a member’s solo album. The separately released solo and Crosby–Nash duo catalogs are not treated as additional CSN or CSNY studio albums; songs from those projects appear here when an official group recording warrants their inclusion.
