Declan McKenna emerged from Hertfordshire as a teenage songwriter with an unusually sharp instinct for pairing bright, melodic indie rock with subjects that reached well beyond ordinary adolescent pop. Before his breakthrough, he uploaded a large body of self-recorded material to Bandcamp, including the 2014 projects TRIBES and I’ve Made It Further Than You (No, Not You). Those early recordings already showed the combination of humor, political observation, guitar pop and restless experimentation that would continue through his later work.
McKenna’s international breakthrough came with “Brazil,” a song he wrote as a teenager about FIFA, inequality and the 2014 World Cup. After winning Glastonbury Festival’s Emerging Talent Competition in 2015 and signing with Columbia Records, he released the Stains and Liar EPs before his major-label debut album, What Do You Think About the Car?, arrived in 2017. The record brought together earlier songs such as “Brazil,” “Paracetamol,” “Bethlehem” and “Isombard” with newer material including “Humongous,” “Make Me Your Queen” and “Listen to Your Friends.”
McKenna expanded the scale of his music on Zeros in 2020, moving toward glam rock, science-fiction imagery and densely arranged guitar music on songs such as “Beautiful Faces,” “The Key to Life on Earth,” “Rapture” and “Be an Astronaut.” His third major-label studio album, What Happened to the Beach?, followed in 2024 with a looser and more textural sound. Physical editions added the three “Mystery Planet” pieces and “It Takes 4,” while the Japanese edition added “The Group,” extending the album beyond the standard digital track listing.
After the What Happened to the Beach? era, McKenna began releasing music independently and issued the double single “Champagne / That’s Life” in 2024. His catalog also includes soundtrack work, collaborations, acoustic recordings, remixes, live-session tracks, charity releases and early self-released material that predates his major-label career. Through October 4, 2026, his newest credited releases include “It might never end” with Adèle Castillon, “F**k It Up” with Master Peace, a Switch Disco remix of “Brazil,” and Blossoms’ “Additional Driver,” on which McKenna is a featured performer and co-writer.
