Dirty Honey made their name the old-school way, grinding it out in Los Angeles, playing club shows, and betting on themselves. Formed in 2017, the band began with singer Marc LaBelle, guitarist John Notto, and bassist Justin Smolian. All three were active in the city’s bar circuit, and after a stint performing in the cover-heavy band Ground Zero, they decided to pursue a more original direction. With the addition of drummer Corey Coverstone, who was later replaced by Jaydon Bean, they cemented their lineup and chose the name Dirty Honey, inspired by a Robert Plant reference to the Honeydrippers.

The band’s career took a sharp turn after music-industry veteran Mark DiDia heard “When I’m Gone.” Impressed by the recording, he became their manager and helped secure opening dates with Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. “When I’m Gone” reached number one on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart, making Dirty Honey the first unsigned band to top that ranking. The breakthrough launched their self-released Dirty Honey EP, recorded in Australia with producer Nick DiDia.

Touring quickly became central to the band’s identity. Dirty Honey opened for the Who, Alter Bridge, Skillet, Guns N’ Roses, the Black Crowes, Kiss, Rival Sons, and other established acts while building a growing headlining audience. Their performances emphasized the same qualities heard in the recordings: direct arrangements, improvisational guitar work, blues-influenced rhythms, and LaBelle’s high, forceful vocals.

Their self-titled debut album was completed under unusual circumstances after the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the band from returning to Australia. Dirty Honey recorded at Henson Studios in Hollywood while Nick DiDia produced remotely. Released in 2021, Dirty Honey included “California Dreamin’,” “The Wire,” “Another Last Time,” “Tied Up,” “Gypsy,” and “Take My Hand.”

Can’t Find the Brakes followed in 2023 and expanded the band’s sound through “Won’t Take Me Alive,” “Coming Home (Ballad of the Shire),” “Roam,” “Dirty Mind,” “Satisfied,” “Rebel Son,” and the title track. The album reflected the confidence of a group that had spent years developing its songs onstage and balancing arena-sized rock with acoustic passages, soul, country, and blues.

The live album Mayhem and Revelry Live documented performances recorded throughout North America, the United Kingdom, and Europe during the Can’t Find the Brakes world tour. Its sixteen tracks included live versions of “When I’m Gone,” “Rolling 7’s,” “California Dreamin’,” “Won’t Take Me Alive,” “Scars,” “Heartbreaker,” “The Wire,” and “Another Last Time.”

Dirty Honey has also released several stand-alone recordings and reinterpretations outside its studio albums. These include “Fire Away,” an updated “Heartbreaker 2.0,” covers of Aerosmith’s “Last Child” and Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” a soundtrack version of “When I’m Gone” recorded for A Minecraft Movie, and “Rock Steady,” recorded with Bad Company.

Dirty Honey’s appeal lies in the band’s ability to revive the physical excitement of classic hard rock without reducing that tradition to imitation. Their music depends on performance, personality, and interaction, from Notto’s guitar work and Smolian’s bass lines to Bean’s drumming and LaBelle’s vocals. That combination has allowed them to move from Los Angeles clubs and sidewalk performances to international tours while remaining independent and closely connected to their audience.
