J Balvin launched his career from Medellín, Colombia, where he initially experimented with rapping in English before committing himself to Spanish-language music that reflected his culture and connected more directly with Latin audiences. Inspired by reggaetón pioneers including Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderón, he spent years developing his identity in Colombia’s underground scene. “Ella Me Cautivó” became an important early breakthrough and helped establish the path toward an international career.
His early projects included Real and El Negocio, followed by La Familia, the album that strengthened his position throughout the Latin music world. “6 AM,” featuring Farruko, became one of the pivotal recordings of that period. Energía followed with songs including “Ginza,” “Bobo,” “Safari,” and “Sigo Extrañándote,” demonstrating how naturally Balvin could move between club music, pop melody, and emotionally direct songwriting.
With Vibras, Balvin placed reggaetón inside a vivid international pop framework without surrendering its Spanish-language identity. “Mi Gente,” recorded with Willy William and later remixed with Beyoncé, became a defining crossover success. The album also included “Machika,” “Ahora,” “Ambiente,” and “No Es Justo,” while collaborations with artists from different countries reinforced Balvin’s position as one of Latin music’s most visible global figures.
Balvin’s collaborative instincts became central to his catalog. His album with Bad Bunny, Oasis, joined two contrasting personalities across songs including “Qué Pretendes,” “La Canción,” “Mojaita,” and “Yo Le Llego.” He has also recorded with Cardi B, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Rosalía, Pharrell Williams, Anitta, Ozuna, Karol G, Nicky Jam, Sean Paul, DJ Snake, and many other artists from Latin music, pop, hip-hop, and electronic music.
Colores organized its songs around individual colors and paired Balvin’s music with a carefully constructed visual identity. Jose was broader and more personal, moving among reggaetón, pop, electronic music, and reflective material. Rayo later returned to the energy of the car and sound-system culture that shaped his early ambitions.
Balvin continued that momentum with Mixteip, a compact project that moved through reggaetón, hip-hop, merengue, salsa, and romantic pop. Its collaborators included Stormzy, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Omega, Lenny Tavárez, and Justin Quiles. He then joined fellow Medellín artist Ryan Castro for OMERTA, a ten-song collaborative album built around their shared Colombian identity and contrasting vocal styles.
Outside music, Balvin has become known for fashion collaborations, bold visual design, and his willingness to discuss anxiety and depression publicly. His documentary The Boy from Medellín presented fame, civic responsibility, family, and mental health as interconnected parts of his life rather than separate public narratives.
Balvin’s influence reaches beyond individual hit records. By continuing to record primarily in Spanish while succeeding across international markets, he helped expand the space available to Latin artists in global pop culture. His catalog reflects that history through solo recordings, remixes, soundtrack appearances, guest verses, collaborative albums, and songs that connect Medellín’s local identity with audiences around the world.
