Hank Williams Sr. remains one of country music’s most influential singers and songwriters. Born in Mount Olive, Alabama, on September 17, 1923, he learned guitar as a boy and built his reputation performing around Montgomery. His plainspoken lyrics, emotional delivery, and gift for memorable melodies helped shape modern country music.

Williams first recorded commercially for Sterling Records before moving to MGM in 1947. Songs such as “Move It on Over,” “Lovesick Blues,” “Cold, Cold Heart,” and “Hey, Good Lookin'” established him as a leading artist. He wrote about heartbreak, loneliness, faith, humor, and everyday struggle, often giving familiar subjects an unforgettable personal voice.

Unlike many later country stars, Williams built his catalog primarily through 78-rpm singles rather than full-length albums. Only two albums were issued during his lifetime. He also made gospel recordings and spoken-word performances under the name Luke the Drifter, alongside numerous radio broadcasts and demos. His songwriting reached other performers, even when he never recorded a version himself.

Williams died on January 1, 1953, at the age of twenty-nine. His posthumous success included “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Kaw-Liga,” and “Take These Chains from My Heart.” This alphabetical catalog brings together his own released performances and documented compositions recorded by other artists. Those additional entries identify the recording artist, including songs assembled from his unfinished lyrics after his death, while the later album section distinguishes his releases from other performers’ records.
