Holy Soldier combined the polish of late-1980s melodic metal with lyrics that addressed faith, temptation, suffering, and spiritual commitment without abandoning the hooks and guitar-driven weight expected from the Los Angeles hard-rock scene. Across three studio albums, an early demo, and two new recordings added to the live retrospective Encore, the band moved from soaring glam-metal harmonies toward the darker alternative sound of Promise Man.

Holy Soldier formed in Los Angeles in 1985 around bassist Andy Robbins and guitarist Jamie Cramer. The developing lineup also included guitarist Michael Cutting and drummer Terry “Animal” Russell. After working with earlier vocalists, the band recruited Steven Patrick in 1988 and recorded a five-song demo containing “Lake of Fire,” “Don’t Walk Away,” “Heart’s Desire,” “You Don’t Know Me,” and “Last Days.”
The band signed with Myrrh Records, an imprint distributed through Word and A&M, and released its self-titled debut in 1990. Produced by former Bloodgood guitarist David Zaffiro, Holy Soldier paired melodic metal and hard rock with explicitly Christian themes on songs including “Stranger,” “See No Evil,” “Tear Down the Walls,” and “When the Reign Comes Down.”
The debut won the 1991 Dove Awards for Hard Music Album and Hard Music Recorded Song, with “Stranger” receiving the song award. Its combination of layered vocals, twin guitars, and polished production gave Holy Soldier an audience that extended beyond the Christian rock market.
Last Train followed in 1992 with Patrick, Robbins, Cramer, Russell, and guitarist Scott Soderstrom. The nine-song album included “Virtue & Vice,” “Crazy,” “Gimme Shelter,” “Dead End Drive,” and the title track. “Last Train” also received a Superior Creativity Award from the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
Patrick and Cramer departed after the Last Train period. Eric Wayne became the band’s lead vocalist, while Michael Cutting returned to a lineup that also included Robbins and Soderstrom. Holy Soldier’s third studio album, Promise Man, arrived in 1995 and replaced much of the earlier glam-metal sheen with a heavier alternative-rock and grunge influence.
Promise Man included “Rust,” “My World,” “Cover Me,” “Love Conquers All,” and a version of Larry Norman’s “Why Don’t You Look into Jesus.” The album and its title track won the Dove Awards for Hard Music Album and Hard Music Recorded Song in 1996.
The 1997 release Encore combined live performances from the band’s catalog with new studio material. “Whisper” opened the album, while “In the End” closed it and brought the band’s two principal vocal eras together. Holy Soldier disbanded after the release, though members of the original lineup reunited for selected performances beginning in 2005, with additional appearances continuing into 2007.
