Imperial Triumphant formed in New York City in 2005 through guitarist and vocalist Zachary Ilya Ezrin. The project began in black metal but steadily developed into a distinctive collision of dissonant death metal, free jazz, modern classical writing, industrial rhythm, and the sounds and imagery of New York architecture.
The early EPs Summons to War and Obeisance documented the group’s first phase before Abominamentvm arrived in 2012. That debut album introduced “Manifesto,” “Crushing the Idol,” “Devs est Machina,” and “S.P.Q.R.,” while the 2013 Goliath EP added “Sodom” and “Gomorrah.”
Abyssal Gods followed in 2015, sharpening the band’s use of dissonance, abrupt structural changes, and orchestral detail. The 2016 EP Inceste pushed those ideas further through “Libertine,” “Kaleidoscopic Orgies,” “Oblivion in Morsels,” and “Breath of Innocence.”
The lineup of Ezrin, bassist and keyboardist Steve Blanco, and drummer Kenny Grohowski solidified the band’s modern identity. Vile Luxury, released in 2018, presented New York as a landscape of wealth, decay, machinery, and cultural overload. “Swarming Opulence,” “Gotham Luxe,” “Chernobyl Blues,” and “Luxury in Death” joined extreme metal with brass, piano, electronics, and jazz-derived rhythmic language.
Alphaville arrived through Century Media Records in 2020. The album included “Rotted Futures,” “City Swine,” “Atomic Age,” “Transmission to Mercury,” and “The Greater Good,” with guest contributions from musicians including Tomas Haake, Fredrik Thordendal, and Kenny G. The live album An Evening with Imperial Triumphant followed in 2021, documenting the trio at New York’s Slipper Room.
Spirit of Ecstasy expanded the band’s sound again in 2022. “Chump Change,” “Metrovertigo,” “Tower of Glory, City of Shame,” and “Merkurius Gilded” moved between crushing ensemble passages, improvisation, unusual instrumentation, and guest performances without separating the jazz and metal elements into distinct sections.
In 2023, Imperial Triumphant released five cover recordings collected on Covers Collection. The group reworked songs associated with Radiohead, Dizzy Gillespie, Metallica, Rush, and Wayne Shorter. The following year brought Vile Luxury – Redux 1924, a complete remix and remaster of the 2018 album by Colin Marston.
Goldstar, the band’s sixth studio album, arrived in March 2025. Its nine tracks included “Eye of Mars,” “Gomorrah Nouveaux,” “Hotel Sphinx,” “Lexington Delirium,” “Pleasuredome,” and “Industry of Misery,” with guest appearances from Tomas Haake, Dave Lombardo, and Yoshiko Ohara.
