Jason Derulo was born in Miramar, Florida, on September 21, 1989, to Haitian immigrant parents. Haitian Creole was his first language, and he began writing songs when he was young. He attended performing arts schools in Florida, where he trained in singing, acting, and dance. Before releasing music under his own name, he worked as a songwriter for artists including Diddy, Danity Kane, Donnie Klang, Sean Kingston, Cassie, and Lil Wayne. He also performed in theater productions that included Ragtime and Smokey Joe’s Cafe. In 2006, he won the grand prize on Showtime at the Apollo, and he later signed with J. R. Rotem at Beluga Heights, which partnered with Warner Bros. Records.
His debut single, “Whatcha Say,” was released in 2009 and reached Number 1 in the United States. His self-titled debut studio album followed in 2010 and produced additional hit singles including “In My Head” and “Ridin’ Solo.” His second studio album, Future History, arrived in 2011 with major international singles such as “Don’t Wanna Go Home” and “It Girl.” During rehearsals for the album’s tour, Derulo suffered a serious neck fracture that forced him to cancel the planned dates.
In 2013, Derulo released the international version of his third album, Tattoos. A reconfigured United States edition appeared in 2014 under the title Talk Dirty, bringing together songs including “Talk Dirty,” “Trumpets,” “The Other Side,” and “Wiggle.” His fourth studio album, Everything Is 4, followed in 2015 and included “Want to Want Me,” “Cheyenne,” and “Get Ugly.” The 2016 compilation Platinum Hits collected many of his major singles from the first phase of his career.
Derulo entered another major period of commercial success in 2020 with “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat),” recorded with Jawsh 685. A remix featuring BTS reached Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. His fifth studio album, Nu King, arrived in 2024 through Atlantic Records. The 27-song project gave a full-length home to previously released songs such as “Swalla,” “Take You Dancing,” “Lifestyle,” “Acapulco,” and “Love Not War,” while also introducing newer collaborations with Michael Bublé, Meghan Trainor, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, David Guetta, and others.
New releases continued through 2025 and 2026. Derulo collaborated with Nora Fatehi on “Snake,” followed with the singles “Who Hurt You” and “Miracle,” and released the eight-song EP The Last Dance (Part 1) in January 2026. That project included “Sexy For Me,” “Complicated,” “Deep Love,” “Pineapple,” “You DJ, I’ll Drive,” “Dial Tones,” and “DELETE.” Later 2026 releases included “Mi Chico,” recorded with DJ Goja and Melody, and “Privacy,” a reunion with Pitbull.
Derulo has sold hundreds of millions of singles worldwide and has received recognition from BMI, the Teen Choice Awards, the NRJ Music Awards, and the MTV Europe Music Awards. His work outside recording has included serving as a judge on So You Think You Can Dance, appearing in the film Cats, and taking television roles in productions including Empire. These projects extended a career built equally around songwriting, vocals, choreography, and large-scale performance.
