Joe Walsh has always sounded as though he is discovering the song while playing it, bending hard-rock riffs, blues phrasing, studio experimentation, and dry humor into a style no one else quite owns. His catalog stretches from the James Gang and Barnstorm through a long solo career, defining Eagles performances, soundtrack work, collaborations, live recordings, and unexpected musical detours. This A-to-Z list serves it all up.

Joe Walsh’s path through rock and roll has never followed a straight line. Born in Wichita, Kansas, and raised in several parts of the country, he found an important musical home in Ohio while attending Kent State University. By 1968, he had joined the Cleveland-based James Gang, where his guitar playing, songwriting, and lead vocals helped transform the group into a powerful trio. Recordings including “Funk #49” and “Walk Away” established the sound that first brought him national attention.
Walsh recorded three studio albums with the James Gang: Yer’ Album, James Gang Rides Again, and Thirds. Although the group’s momentum was growing, Walsh left in 1971 because the music he wanted to make no longer fit comfortably inside the trio format. He moved to Colorado and formed Barnstorm, whose self-titled 1972 debut introduced a more spacious and experimental approach.
Barnstorm’s second album, The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get, arrived in 1973 and included “Rocky Mountain Way.” The song’s heavy riff, open-road atmosphere, and talk-box guitar became central to Walsh’s identity as a solo performer. He followed with So What and the live album You Can’t Argue with a Sick Mind, strengthening a catalog that could move from hard rock to acoustic reflection, instrumental passages, and absurdist humor.
Walsh joined the Eagles in 1975, replacing Bernie Leadon as the band moved toward a harder rock sound. His first studio album with the group, Hotel California, included “Pretty Maids All in a Row” and “Life in the Fast Lane,” which grew from one of Walsh’s guitar riffs. He later sang “In the City,” “Guilty of the Crime,” and “Last Good Time in Town” on Eagles albums while continuing to bring James Gang and solo songs into the band’s concerts.
His solo career continued with But Seriously, Folks…, which produced “Life’s Been Good,” followed by There Goes the Neighborhood, You Bought It – You Name It, The Confessor, Got Any Gum?, Ordinary Average Guy, and Songs for a Dying Planet. After a long break from solo albums, Walsh returned with Analog Man in 2012, a record that paired his familiar humor and guitar sound with reflections on sobriety, technology, friendship, and survival.
Walsh’s catalog also reaches beyond his principal bands and solo albums. He first recorded “In the City” for the soundtrack to The Warriors before recording another version with the Eagles. His many collaborations have included work with Ringo Starr, Dan Fogelberg, Steve Winwood, Bob Seger, B.B. King, the Foo Fighters, and numerous other artists.
In 2021, Walsh collaborated with Indian sarod master Amjad Ali Khan on the three-song EP Prayers. “Goddess,” “Healing Love,” and “Hope (We Shall Overcome)” placed Walsh’s guitar inside a cross-cultural instrumental setting that differed sharply from his better-known rock recordings.
As a member of the Eagles, Walsh entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and received the Kennedy Center Honors with the band in 2016. He has also used his public profile to support veterans through VetsAid, the nonprofit organization he founded to raise money for veterans’ service groups.
Walsh’s humor and self-awareness have remained inseparable from his musicianship. His songs can mock rock-star excess, confront personal damage, or turn a strange phrase into a memorable hook, yet the guitar playing beneath them is always precise, inventive, and immediately recognizable.
Across the James Gang, Barnstorm, the Eagles, solo albums, soundtracks, live releases, and collaborations, Joe Walsh has created a body of work that is technically adventurous without losing its personality. His best recordings sound serious about music without ever becoming overly serious about the person making it.
