Jorja Alice Smith grew up in Walsall, England, where she began developing her voice and writing songs at her family’s piano. Encouraged by a Jamaican-born father who had performed in a neo-soul group and a jewellery-designer mother who maintained a creative household, Smith balanced classical vocal training and oboe lessons at Aldridge School with songwriting and YouTube covers. Her version of Labrinth’s “Earthquake” reached publisher Guy Moot in 2012 and helped set her professional career in motion.

While still a teenager, Smith travelled from Walsall to London for songwriting sessions with Maverick Sabre and Ed Thomas, refining a lyrical style that combined autobiography with social observation. In 2016, she released “Blue Lights,” a song built around a sample of Dizzee Rascal’s “Sirens” that addressed racial profiling and police encounters. “Where Did I Go?” followed that year and received public praise from Drake, expanding her audience before the release of her debut EP.

The four-song Project 11 arrived in November 2016. The EP combined jazz phrasing, soul, and contemporary electronic production through “Something in the Way,” “So Lonely,” “Carry Me Home,” and “Imperfect Circle.” Smith joined Drake during the Boy Meets World tour and appeared on his 2017 project More Life through “Get It Together” and “Jorja Interlude.” That year also brought “Beautiful Little Fools,” “On My Mind,” and Kali Uchis’s “Tyrant.”

Smith opened 2018 with “Let Me Down,” featuring Stormzy, and contributed “I Am” to Black Panther: The Album. Her debut studio album, Lost & Found, was released on June 8, 2018, after several years of writing and recording. The album reached number three on the UK Albums Chart and included “Blue Lights,” “Teenage Fantasy,” “February 3rd,” “Where Did I Go?,” and “Don’t Watch Me Cry.” It also earned a Mercury Prize nomination.

Smith won the 2019 BRIT Award for British Female Solo Artist and received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Collaborations during this period included Burna Boy’s “Gum Body,” her own single “Be Honest,” featuring Burna Boy, Loyle Carner’s “Loose Ends,” and Maverick Sabre’s “Slow Down.” Her performances and recordings continued to connect R&B, soul, UK garage, reggae, jazz, and hip-hop.

Rather than rush her second album, Smith released the eight-song project Be Right Back in May 2021. Led by “Addicted” and “Gone,” the release also included “Home,” “Burn,” “Bussdown,” “Time,” “Digging,” and “Weekend.” The project documented ideas developed during the period preceding her next full-length album.

Falling or Flying was released on September 29, 2023, through Smith’s FAMM label. Produced primarily by DameDame*, the album combined UK garage, trip-hop, alternative rock, and neo-soul while featuring J Hus and Lila Iké. Its songs included “Try Me,” “Little Things,” “Go Go Go,” “Feelings,” “Greatest Gift,” and the title track.

Smith revisited the album through Falling or Flying (Reimagined) in 2024, presenting eight songs in stripped-back arrangements. An expanded deluxe edition also collected remixes by Craig David, Camp Habitat, Dirty Danger, Groove Chronicles, Todd Edwards, Floating Points, Nia Archives, and L BEATS. She also released “High” and the double single pairing “Loving You” with “Don’t Let Me Go.”

Her 2025 releases included “The Way I Love You,” “With You,” and an acoustic version of “With You.” Smith also appeared on AJ Tracey’s “Crush,” DAMEDAME*’s “FREEDOM,” Shygirl and SadBoi’s “Wifey Riddim (Club Shy VIP),” Major League DJz’s “Come With Me,” and Mobb Deep’s “Down For You,” featuring Nas.

In 2026, Smith marked the tenth anniversary of “Blue Lights” with “Don’t Leave” and the “Blue Lights (Havoc Remix).” She contributed “Price Of It All” and an Amir Amor remix to the soundtrack for the series Bait, appeared with Wesley Joseph on “July,” and joined Nia Archives on “Get Me Down.”

Smith announced her third studio album, What Are The Odds, for release on August 21, 2026. Produced by P2J, the 12-song album was introduced through “What’s Done Is Done” and “Alive,” featuring Wizkid. The announced track list also includes a collaboration with Devlin on “This City.”

Smith’s career has included the BRIT Critics’ Choice Award, the BRIT Award for British Female Solo Artist, a Grammy nomination, and a Mercury Prize nomination. Through FAMM, she has maintained control over her recordings and visual presentation while continuing to work across R&B, soul, dance, reggae, jazz, and British electronic music.

Outside her studio catalog, Smith has appeared on radio, television, fashion campaigns, soundtracks, and benefit projects. Her songwriting has repeatedly addressed policing, race, relationships, self-doubt, and personal independence, giving her work a balance of social awareness and emotional directness.
