Belfast’s Irish-language hip hop trio Kneecap emerged from West Belfast’s working-class neighborhoods in 2017 with a mission to revitalize the Irish language through satirical rap music. The group consists of three members: Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, all of whom remain with the band since its formation. Kneecap has released two studio albums, 3CAG in 2018 and Fine Art in 2024, both of which blend Irish and English lyrics while addressing themes of Irish language rights, republicanism, and working-class youth culture.
The band’s second album Fine Art debuted at number two on the Irish Albums Chart in June 2024, narrowly missing the top spot by less than 100 sales to Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, making it the highest-charting Irish-language album in chart history. The album reached number 43 on the UK Official Albums Chart and achieved gold certification in Ireland. The group’s debut single “C.E.A.R.T.A.” was released in 2017 and initially banned from Irish radio station RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta for drug references and profanity before being reinstated following fan petitions. The band has performed sold-out tours across the United States, United Kingdom, and Ireland, including headline shows at venues ranging from New York’s Bowery Ballroom to Belfast’s SSE Arena.
A biographical film titled Kneecap, in which the three members play themselves alongside Michael Fassbender, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, becoming the first Irish-language film to debut at the festival. The film won the NEXT Audience Award at Sundance and received six BAFTA nominations in 2025, winning Best Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for director Rich Peppiatt. The film also won seven British Independent Film Awards and received 17 Irish Film and Television Academy nominations. Kneecap was selected as Ireland’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, while the band’s song “Sick in the Head” was shortlisted for Best Original Song.
Mo Chara
Mo Chara, born Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh on October 16, 1997, co-founded Kneecap in 2017 and serves as one of the group’s two MCs. The Belfast native grew up in West Belfast and attended Coláiste Feirste, an Irish-language secondary school, where he developed fluency in Irish. Mo Chara’s stage name translates to “My Friend” in English. He was once detained by police for spray-painting the word “rights” in Irish and refused to speak English to officers, requiring them to obtain a translator, an incident that helped inspire the band’s formation narrative.
Mo Chara has appeared on both of Kneecap’s studio albums, 3CAG in 2018 and Fine Art in 2024, contributing vocals and co-writing credits throughout both releases. On 3CAG, he performed on tracks including “Your All Legitimate Targets,” “Amach Anocht,” and “Ceacht Mo Chara,” which bears his stage name in the title. For Fine Art, released in June 2024 and produced by Toddla T, Mo Chara delivered performances on the title track “Fine Art,” “I’m Flush,” “Better Way To Live” featuring Fontaines D.C.’s Grian Chatten, and “Sick In The Head,” among others. The album was recorded at producer Toddla T’s studio and conceptualized as taking place in a fictional West Belfast pub called The Rutz.
In 2024, Mo Chara starred as a fictionalized version of himself in the biographical film Kneecap, directed by Rich Peppiatt. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024 and won the NEXT Audience Award, marking the first Irish-language film to premiere at Sundance. Mo Chara received critical acclaim for his debut acting performance, with the Sundance jury stating the trio delivered “a seamless performance as an ensemble of musicians who make their acting debut in Kneecap.” He shared nominations for Best Actor at the Irish Film and Television Academy Awards alongside his bandmates. The film went on to win seven British Independent Film Awards in December 2024, with Mo Chara sharing the joint lead performance award with his fellow band members.
Mo Chara was charged with a terrorism-related offense under the Terrorism Act 2006 in May 2025 for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag during a concert at London’s O2 Forum in Kentish Town in November 2024. He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 18, 2025, and was released on unconditional bail. Mo Chara denied the charges, stating the flag was thrown onto the stage and that he does not support Hezbollah. On September 26, 2025, chief magistrate Paul Goldspring dismissed the case at Woolwich Crown Court, ruling that prosecutors had filed the charges one day after the six-month statutory limit. The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently announced its intention to appeal the ruling. Following the dismissal, Mo Chara addressed the charges in the song “No Comment,” a collaboration with producer Sub Focus released in November 2025, which reflected on the prosecution and continued legal proceedings.
Móglaí Bap
Móglaí Bap, born Naoise Ó Cairealláin in 1994, co-founded Kneecap in 2017 and performs as one of the group’s two MCs alongside Mo Chara. He grew up in West Belfast as the only Irish-speaking child in his neighborhood, raised in a household where Irish was the primary language. His stage name derives from the bowl haircut he wore as a child, which resembled the character Mowgli from The Jungle Book. Móglaí Bap is the son of Gearóid Ó Cairealláin, a prominent activist in the Irish language movement who founded the daily newspaper Lá, the cultural center Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich, and the Irish-language radio station Raidió Fáilte. His mother, Aoife Ní Riain, was a presenter with Belfast’s Irish-language community radio station Raidió Fáilte. Gearóid Ó Cairealláin passed away in December 2024, with Kneecap dedicating their December 21, 2024 SSE Arena concert in Belfast to his memory.
Móglaí Bap appeared on Kneecap’s debut album 3CAG, released in 2018, performing on tracks including “Your All Legitimate Targets,” “Amach Anocht,” “Tá na Baggies ar an Talamh,” and “C.E.A.R.T.A.” The album’s first single “C.E.A.R.T.A.” was inspired by an incident where Móglaí Bap and a friend spray-painted the word “Cearta” on a bus stop the day before an Irish Language Act march in Belfast. While Móglaí Bap escaped police, his friend was arrested and refused to speak English, requiring a translator. On the band’s second album Fine Art, released in June 2024, Móglaí Bap contributed vocals to all twelve tracks including “3CAG” featuring Radie Peat, “I bhFiacha Linne,” “Drug Dealin Pagans,” “Parful,” and “Rhino Ket.” The album debuted at number two on the Irish Albums Chart and peaked at number 43 on the UK Official Albums Chart.
Before forming Kneecap, Móglaí Bap ran a sound recording and music publishing venture called Fite Fuaite Ltd in West Belfast while still a student. The company was established in 2016 and dissolved in 2018. He has been open about his struggles with gambling addiction, which led him to write and perform a one-man play titled Minimal Human Contact that premiered at the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2022. The play explored the story of a young man dealing with gambling addiction in West Belfast and drew from Móglaí Bap’s personal experiences. The play received positive reviews for its honest portrayal of addiction and its impact on working-class communities.
Móglaí Bap starred as a fictionalized version of himself in the 2024 biographical film Kneecap, directed by Rich Peppiatt. In the film, Michael Fassbender portrayed his father Arlo Ó Cairealláin, a character based loosely on his real-life father Gearóid. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, where it became the first Irish-language film to win the NEXT Audience Award. Móglaí Bap shared acting honors with his bandmates, receiving joint Best Actor nominations at the 2025 Irish Film and Television Academy Awards. The film went on to win Best British Independent Film at the British Independent Film Awards in December 2024, with Móglaí Bap sharing the joint lead performance award. The film received six BAFTA nominations in 2025 and was selected as Ireland’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
DJ Próvaí
DJ Próvaí, born JJ Ó Dochartaigh, co-founded Kneecap in 2017 and serves as the group’s DJ and producer. Unlike his bandmates who are from West Belfast, DJ Próvaí is originally from Derry. His stage name references the Provisional IRA, with “Próvaí” being the Irish pronunciation of “Provie,” a colloquial term for the organization. DJ Próvaí performs wearing an Irish tricolour balaclava that conceals his identity, a practice he initially adopted to protect his teaching career. He worked as an Irish-language teacher and music teacher until 2020, when he left his position after his school learned of his involvement with Kneecap following the emergence of a video showing him with “Brits Out” written on his buttocks during a concert performance.
DJ Próvaí contributed production and DJ work to Kneecap’s debut album 3CAG, released in 2018. The eight-track album featured his beats and production on songs including “Your All Legitimate Targets,” “Amach Anocht,” “C.E.A.R.T.A.,” “Incognito,” and “Your Sniffer Dogs are Shite.” The album title 3CAG refers to the Irish phrase “trí chonsan agus guta,” meaning “three consonants and a vowel,” which serves as slang for MDMA. On the band’s second album Fine Art, released in June 2024, DJ Próvaí worked with English producer Toddla T, who had previously worked with Stormzy and Aitch. The album featured DJ Próvaí’s production work alongside Toddla T’s contributions, with the conceptual album envisioned as taking place during a night at an imaginary West Belfast pub called The Rutz. The album included interludes voiced by DJ Próvaí and friends, including DJ Annie Mac.
Outside of Kneecap, DJ Próvaí worked as an Irish-language teacher before dedicating himself full-time to the band following his departure from teaching in 2020. According to interviews, his partner has been involved in the Irish language campaign and activism. DJ Próvaí has stated that his experience as a teacher influenced the band’s mission to bring the Irish language to younger generations through hip-hop music. He served as a Police Service of Northern Ireland translator before becoming a full-time music teacher at a local Irish-language school, a background that plays into the band’s origin story where he encounters Mo Chara while serving as a translator during Mo Chara’s police interrogation.
DJ Próvaí starred as a fictionalized version of himself in the 2024 film Kneecap, his first acting role. The film depicts him as a music teacher who discovers Mo Chara’s notebook of Irish-language poetry during a police interrogation and decides to set the verses to music, leading to the formation of the band. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2024 and won the NEXT Audience Award. DJ Próvaí shared joint Best Actor nominations at the 2025 Irish Film and Television Academy Awards with his bandmates, marking an unprecedented triple lead actor recognition for the same project. The film received six BAFTA nominations in 2025, with director Rich Peppiatt winning Best Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer at the February 2025 ceremony. DJ Próvaí has expressed no regrets about leaving teaching, noting that many of his former students have gone on to become Irish teachers themselves. In December 2024, he stated his hope to meet Samuel L. Jackson at the Academy Awards ceremony.
