L.S. Dunes came together in Chicago, Illinois, during the locked-down pressure of 2020, with five musicians whose histories already carried deep roots in post-hardcore, emo, punk rock, and alternative rock. The lineup united Anthony Green of Circa Survive, Saosin, and the Sound of Animals Fighting on vocals, Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance on guitar, Travis Stever of Coheed and Cambria on guitar, Tim Payne of Thursday on bass guitar, and Tucker Rule of Thursday on drums. The project grew out of rehearsals connected to Thursday’s 2020 holiday livestream, at first moving under the working title Dad Bods before becoming L.S. Dunes. The members recorded their parts separately for the debut album before Anthony Green was confirmed as the singer, with Rule sending him instrumental tracks before revealing the full lineup.
The band’s public arrival came in 2022 when L.S. Dunes appeared on the Riot Fest poster, immediately attracting attention because of the members’ backgrounds. Frank Iero helped unveil the band alongside Travis Stever, Tim Payne, Tucker Rule, and Anthony Green, creating instant interest among fans of My Chemical Romance, Coheed and Cambria, Thursday, Circa Survive, and Saosin. The debut single, “Permanent Rebellion,” was released through Fantasy Records on August 26, 2022, with a music video and tour plans attached to the launch. The song introduced the band’s sharp, urgent post-hardcore attack, giving longtime fans of the members’ earlier work something that felt familiar in spirit while still functioning as its own band identity.
L.S. Dunes made its live debut at Riot Fest in Douglass Park in Chicago on September 16, 2022. The timing carried extra weight because My Chemical Romance also headlined that day, placing Frank Iero’s new project in front of a major audience already connected to his musical history. The band played six songs from its upcoming debut album, Past Lives, establishing itself quickly as more than a studio side project. After debuting “2022” at Riot Fest, the band released it as the second single, accompanied by a psychedelic video. “Bombsquad” followed on October 21, 2022, with a live video, and the song came from a poem Anthony Green wrote around the time of the January 6 United States Capitol attack.
Past Lives was released on November 11, 2022, through Fantasy Records. The album appeared in vinyl, CD, cassette, digital download, and streaming formats, giving the band a full physical and digital rollout that matched the energy surrounding its debut. The record reached number 174 on the Billboard 200, number 21 in Scotland, number 59 on the UK Album Downloads chart, and number 5 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart. Those chart positions reflected how quickly the band’s audience formed around the combined history of its members. The album was preceded by “Permanent Rebellion,” “2022,” and “Bombsquad,” with each single helping define the band’s tense, guitar-driven sound before the full record arrived.
The touring cycle expanded in 2023. L.S. Dunes played its first UK tour in January 2023 and its first US tour in July 2023. The band returned with “Benadryl Subreddit” on June 23, 2023, a song whose title came from a conversation between Frank Iero and Mikey Way of My Chemical Romance about legal ways of getting high. The music video was directed, shot, and edited by Nick and Pat Demarais and produced by Cheers Dude Productions. Later that year, the band released Lost Songs: Lines and Shapes on November 10, 2023, a demo album featuring early versions connected to the material from Past Lives.
By 2024, L.S. Dunes had moved into its second full-length chapter. The band confirmed in May 2024 that a new album had been recorded, then released “How Dare You” and “Fatal Deluxe” during the year. “Machines” and “Paper Tigers” also became part of the next album cycle. Violet was released on January 31, 2025, through Fantasy Records, in vinyl, CD, cassette, digital download, and streaming formats. The album reached number 3 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart, showing that the band’s following had not faded after the immediate excitement surrounding its formation. With Past Lives and Violet, L.S. Dunes has released two studio albums, along with the demo album Lost Songs: Lines and Shapes.
The band’s appeal rests largely on chemistry. L.S. Dunes is loved because it does not feel like a celebrity lineup assembled only for name recognition. Each member brings a specific background, Green’s intense vocal delivery, Iero and Stever’s layered guitar work, Payne’s bass foundation, and Rule’s forceful drumming. The band’s songs have connected with listeners who grew up on post-hardcore and emo but still want music that sounds alive in the present tense. L.S. Dunes has not been defined by major awards in the material available so far, but its chart activity, festival debut, international touring, and strong fan response gave the group immediate credibility in a field where side projects often disappear quickly.
Outside the standard album format, L.S. Dunes has built much of its identity through music videos, live performance rollouts, limited physical releases, and flexible touring arrangements. The singles “Permanent Rebellion,” “2022,” “Bombsquad,” “Benadryl Subreddit,” “How Dare You,” “Fatal Deluxe,” “Machines,” “Paper Tigers,” and “Violet” helped the band maintain momentum between full releases. The group also used touring substitutes when needed, with Marfred Rodriguez-Lopez filling in on bass guitar in 2023, Steven Battelle of LostAlone filling in on guitar in 2024, and Evan Nestor filling in on guitar in 2025. That practical touring flexibility helped keep L.S. Dunes active while its members continued balancing commitments connected to several major bands.
