Complete List Of Van Halen Songs From A to Z

Van Halen’s catalog changed the sound and spectacle of hard rock through Eddie Van Halen’s revolutionary guitar work, Alex Van Halen’s powerful drumming, Michael Anthony’s harmonies, and three distinct lead-vocal eras. (Well, actually, we only count two.) This complete A-to-Z guide brings together every studio-album track along with the band’s essential soundtrack songs, B-sides, compilation exclusives, instrumentals, and later reunion recordings.

Van Halen’s meteoric rise from Pasadena, California, transformed the face of rock music and established a new standard for guitar-driven rock in the late 1970s and 1980s. Brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen began playing together in bands during the early 1970s, using names including Genesis and Mammoth before adopting the Van Halen name. The classic lineup came together with vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony. Their relentless work on the Southern California club circuit eventually led to a Warner Bros. Records contract and one of the most successful careers in hard-rock history.

The band’s self-titled debut album, Van Halen, was released in 1978 and became one of rock’s most influential records. Anchored by “Runnin’ with the Devil,” “Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love,” “Jamie’s Cryin’,” “You Really Got Me,” and Eddie’s instrumental showcase “Eruption,” the album introduced the group’s combination of hard-rock power, pop instincts, humor, vocal harmonies, and virtuosic musicianship. Van Halen followed it with Van Halen II in 1979, Women and Children First in 1980, Fair Warning in 1981, and Diver Down in 1982.

Van Halen’s commercial peak with Roth arrived with 1984. The album expanded the band’s use of keyboards without abandoning its guitar-driven identity. “Jump” became Van Halen’s only number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, while “Panama,” “Hot for Teacher,” “I’ll Wait,” and “Drop Dead Legs” became enduring parts of the band’s catalog. Roth departed in 1985 after growing creative and personal tensions within the group.

Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen and made his studio debut on 5150 in 1986. The album became the band’s first number-one record in the United States and produced “Why Can’t This Be Love,” “Dreams,” “Love Walks In,” and “Best of Both Worlds.” The success continued with OU812 in 1988, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge in 1991, and Balance in 1995. All four Hagar-era studio albums reached number one.

Van Halen released twelve studio albums in total. Gary Cherone sang on Van Halen III in 1998, while Roth returned for the new compilation recordings “Me Wise Magic” and “Can’t Get This Stuff No More” in 1996 and later rejoined the band full-time. The final studio album, A Different Kind of Truth, arrived in 2012 with Roth on vocals and Wolfgang Van Halen on bass.

The band received the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance for For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Songs including “Dance the Night Away,” “Unchained,” “Right Now,” “When It’s Love,” “Poundcake,” “Top of the World,” and “Humans Being” demonstrate how effectively Van Halen combined technical ability with memorable hooks and distinctive personalities.

Eddie Van Halen’s influence on rock guitar remains impossible to overstate. His use of two-handed tapping, harmonics, tremolo effects, rhythmic invention, custom-built instruments, and highly personal tone inspired generations of players. His uncredited guitar solo on Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” also brought his playing to an enormous pop audience beyond Van Halen’s established fan base.

Van Halen’s legacy is defined by much more than record sales or chart positions. The band combined raw power, humor, precision, melody, and a sense of danger that made its recordings and concerts immediately recognizable. Eddie Van Halen’s death in 2020 marked the end of the band, but Van Halen’s twelve studio albums and extensive song catalog continue to influence musicians and attract new generations of listeners.
