Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, comes from Lithia Springs, Georgia, a small city outside of Atlanta. He first began to attract attention in 2018 by posting songs and memes on social media platforms such as Twitter and SoundCloud. In December 2018, he released “Old Town Road,” which initially gained traction through TikTok and meme culture, resulting in explosive viral success.
By early 2019, “Old Town Road” had become a major hit, leading to a remix with Billy Ray Cyrus in April 2019. The song achieved unprecedented commercial performance, spending nineteen consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100—setting a new record for the longest-running number one single in chart history. The song received diamond certification from the RIAA, signifying over ten million units sold in the United States. “Old Town Road” also won the Grammy Awards for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video in 2020.
Lil Nas X’s debut extended play, 7, was released in June 2019 and included additional hits such as “Panini” and “Rodeo” featuring Cardi B. “Panini” reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and charted internationally. Both “Panini” and “Rodeo” were performed on high-profile television appearances, including the MTV Video Music Awards and the Grammy Awards.
His debut studio album, Montero, was released on September 17, 2021. The album produced the singles “Montero (Call Me by Your Name),” “Sun Goes Down,” and “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow. “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his second chart-topping single, and “Industry Baby” also reached number one. The album charted in the top five in several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom.
Lil Nas X has received numerous accolades, including two Grammy Awards, five Billboard Music Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, two American Music Awards, and a GLAAD Media Award. He has also been included in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list and Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2019.
His influence extends outside of music through fashion, high-profile appearances, and brand collaborations. Lil Nas X has worked with companies such as Nike and Logitech, and he is recognized for his distinct style at events such as the Met Gala. He is also known for his outspoken activism for LGBTQ+ rights and representation, especially as an openly gay Black artist.
