Sons of Apollo was formed in 2017 by drummer Mike Portnoy and keyboardist Derek Sherinian, who had previously worked together in Dream Theater. They assembled a lineup featuring bassist Billy Sheehan, guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, and vocalist Jeff Scott Soto. The five musicians brought extensive backgrounds in progressive rock, hard rock, and heavy metal to a band built around forceful songwriting and technical musicianship.

The group’s debut studio album, Psychotic Symphony, was released on October 20, 2017. Produced by Portnoy and Sherinian, the album combined progressive structures, heavy guitar riffs, melodic vocals, and extended instrumental passages. “Coming Home,” “Signs of the Time,” “God of the Sun,” “Labyrinth,” and “Alive” established the sound that Sons of Apollo carried onto concert stages around the world.

In 2018, Sons of Apollo released the six-track Alive / Tengo Vida EP. The release included the original “Alive,” acoustic and radio versions, and three Spanish-language versions recorded under the title “Tengo Vida.”

The band documented its first touring cycle with Live with the Plovdiv Psychotic Symphony, released in August 2019. Recorded at the Ancient Roman Theatre in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the performance featured Sons of Apollo with an orchestra and choir. The 24-track live album combined material from Psychotic Symphony with instrumental solos and songs originally recorded by Dream Theater, Queen, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow, Ozzy Osbourne, and Van Halen.

Sons of Apollo released its second studio album, MMXX, on January 17, 2020. The eight-song record included “Goodbye Divinity,” “Wither to Black,” “Asphyxiation,” “Desolate July,” “King of Delusion,” “Fall to Ascend,” “Resurrection Day,” and the extended closing composition “New World Today.”

The group’s 2020 touring plans were interrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the five members returned to other musical commitments. Sons of Apollo did not release another studio album after MMXX. Their recorded catalog remains a concentrated collection of two studio albums, one live album, the Alive / Tengo Vida EP, and the alternate and live versions listed below.
