Linda Ronstadt’s musical roots run deep in the Arizona desert, where she was raised in Tucson in a family steeped in tradition and cultural heritage. The Mexican American influence of her upbringing later resurfaced in some of her most personal work, but her professional career began after she moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1960s. Teaming with Bobby Kimmel and Kenny Edwards, she formed the Stone Poneys, a folk-rock trio that found success with the 1967 single “Different Drum.” Though the group disbanded soon afterward, Ronstadt’s powerful, emotionally direct voice had already begun turning heads throughout the music industry.
Her solo career took flight in the late 1960s and early 1970s as she toured extensively and released albums that revealed her commitment to blending country, rock, folk, and pop. Her 1974 breakthrough album, Heart Like a Wheel, reached number one on both the Billboard 200 and the country albums chart. It produced the chart-topping single “You’re No Good,” as well as “When Will I Be Loved,” which reached number two. The album’s success solidified Ronstadt’s place in the growing field of country rock, a style she helped define and popularize.
The middle and late 1970s marked a period of enormous commercial success for Ronstadt. She followed Heart Like a Wheel with a string of platinum albums, including Prisoner in Disguise (1975), Hasten Down the Wind (1976), Simple Dreams (1977), and Living in the USA (1978). Hits from this period included “Blue Bayou,” “It’s So Easy,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me,” and “Back in the U.S.A.” Each release reinforced her status as one of the most successful and respected vocalists of her generation, while her interpretations of songs associated with Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Warren Zevon, and many others introduced classic material to new audiences.
Throughout the 1980s, Ronstadt continued exploring new territory and taking artistic risks. Her performance in The Pirates of Penzance brought her to Broadway and earned her a Tony Award nomination. Her collaboration with arranger and conductor Nelson Riddle on a trilogy of traditional pop albums, What’s New (1983), Lush Life (1984), and For Sentimental Reasons (1986), demonstrated her remarkable vocal range and introduced a younger audience to the Great American Songbook. The albums became major commercial successes while earning praise for Ronstadt’s elegant phrasing and stylistic precision.
Her catalog expanded further through collaborations with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. Their 1987 album Trio reached number one on the country albums chart and won a Grammy Award, while Trio II followed in 1999. Ronstadt also turned directly toward her family heritage with the 1987 album Canciones de Mi Padre, a Spanish-language collection of traditional Mexican music. The album became the best-selling non-English-language album in American recording history and earned the Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Performance.
Across her solo recordings, Stone Poneys work, collaborative albums, and special projects, Ronstadt built one of the most varied catalogs in American popular music. She placed 38 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and won 11 Grammy Awards from 27 nominations. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, received the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016, and was celebrated as a Kennedy Center Honoree in 2019.
Outside her musical legacy, Ronstadt has remained outspoken about causes she believes in, including the arts, immigration, environmental protection, and Mexican American culture. In 2013, she revealed that a neurological illness had ended her ability to sing. The condition was initially identified as Parkinson’s disease, but the diagnosis was later updated to progressive supranuclear palsy. She continued speaking and writing about her life, music, and heritage through her memoir Simple Dreams and the later book Feels Like Home.
Despite no longer performing, Ronstadt’s influence remains deeply felt in American music. Her interpretations across country, rock, pop, jazz, traditional Mexican music, Cajun music, and the Great American Songbook have inspired generations of vocalists. Her ability to move between genres while maintaining a direct emotional connection to the material remains one of the central reasons she is still beloved by listeners, critics, and fellow musicians.
Linda Ronstadt’s legacy is defined not only by her astonishing vocal talent but also by her artistic courage. She repeatedly refused to be confined by commercial expectations, choosing instead to follow her creative instincts even when that meant taking a less conventional path. Her work introduced new generations to older musical traditions, helped break cultural barriers, and reaffirmed the power of interpretation in popular song.
