Born Brian Hugh Warner on January 5, 1969, in Canton, Ohio, Marilyn Manson first approached music through journalism. After moving to Florida, he interviewed musicians while developing his own ideas about performance, media, violence, celebrity, and American hypocrisy. In 1989, he formed Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids with guitarist Scott Putesky, known as Daisy Berkowitz. The name Marilyn Manson joined the glamour of Marilyn Monroe to the notoriety of Charles Manson, establishing the collision of beauty and brutality that would run through the band’s imagery and music.
The band’s early Florida performances mixed theatrical horror, abrasive rock, and confrontational stagecraft. Trent Reznor signed the group to Nothing Records and produced its 1994 debut, Portrait of an American Family. The 1995 EP Smells Like Children brought national attention through the band’s distorted version of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).” That breakthrough set the stage for Antichrist Superstar in 1996, an industrial-metal concept album built around transformation, power, celebrity, and collapse.
Mechanical Animals followed in 1998, replacing much of the previous album’s scorched industrial atmosphere with glam rock, alienation, and a satirical portrait of fame. Songs including “The Dope Show,” “Rock Is Dead,” and “I Don’t Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me)” became some of the band’s most visible recordings. Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) arrived in 2000 and examined violence, martyrdom, entertainment, and the machinery of American celebrity culture through songs including “Disposable Teens,” “The Fight Song,” and “The Nobodies.”
The band continued changing shape throughout the following decades. The Golden Age of Grotesque (2003) drew on cabaret, electronic production, and Weimar-era imagery, while Eat Me, Drink Me (2007) shifted toward a more personal and gothic form of hard rock. The High End of Low (2009) and Born Villain (2012) extended that darker autobiographical direction before The Pale Emperor (2015), created with Tyler Bates, brought blues textures and a leaner instrumental attack into the catalog.
Heaven Upside Down (2017) reunited Manson with Bates, while We Are Chaos (2020), made with Shooter Jennings, introduced a more melodic and reflective sound. Manson returned to Nuclear Blast Records with One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1 in 2024. The album included “As Sick as the Secrets Within,” “Raise the Red Flag,” “Sacrilegious,” and the title track.
The next phase continued with the 2025 cover of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight,” its companion recording “As Sick as the Secrets Of (Sleep),” and the Falling in Reverse collaboration “God Is a Weapon.” One Assassination Under God – Chapter 2 was then announced with “Exit Wound” as its first single and a nine-song track list that also includes “Unalive,” “Don’t Answer the Door,” “Front Toward Enemy,” and “Enantiomorph.”
Beyond the studio albums, Manson’s catalog reaches into film soundtracks, tribute records, cover songs, B-sides, and collaborations with artists including Rob Zombie, Shooter Jennings, Avril Lavigne, Emigrate, Mr. Oizo, A$AP Ferg, and Falling in Reverse. That wider body of work reveals how often familiar material has been recast through the band’s own theatrical and industrial vocabulary.
Public controversy has remained inseparable from Manson’s career and has shaped how his work and legacy are discussed. Musically, however, the catalog documents a sustained willingness to change characters, production styles, collaborators, and visual language while returning repeatedly to themes of power, religion, violence, identity, and spectacle.
