Originating from Seneca, South Carolina, Needtobreathe was formed in 2001 by brothers Bear and Bo Rinehart, alongside Joe Stillwell and Seth Bolt. Known for blending rock, folk, and Christian music influences, the band has released eight studio albums, including the critically acclaimed The Reckoning (2011) and Rivers in the Wasteland (2014), the latter earning a Grammy nomination. The band’s lineup has evolved over the years, with members leaving and joining, but their music consistently resonates with fans, achieving chart success on both Christian and mainstream platforms. They have garnered numerous awards, including Dove Awards, and continue to innovate while maintaining their distinct sound.
William Stanley “Bear” Rinehart III
Bear Rinehart, a founding member of Needtobreathe, has been the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist since its inception in 2001. Bear’s powerful voice and songwriting skills have been central to the band’s success, shaping hits such as “Brother” and “Multiplied.” His contributions span all of the band’s albums, from Daylight to Into the Mystery. Outside of Needtobreathe, Bear explored solo work under the name Wilder Woods, releasing an album in 2019 that showcased his soulful, introspective artistry.
Seth M. Bolt
Seth Bolt joined Needtobreathe in 2001 as a founding member and serves as the band’s bassist, percussionist, and backing vocalist. Seth’s production expertise has been instrumental in shaping the band’s sound, particularly on albums like The Reckoning and Hard Love. Beyond his musical contributions, Seth is the founder of Bolt Farm Treehouse, a luxury retreat that reflects his creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.
Josh Lovelace
Josh Lovelace joined Needtobreathe in 2011, bringing his expertise on the Hammond organ and piano. His first major contributions appeared on The Reckoning, and he has since played an essential role in the band’s sound, particularly on Rivers in the Wasteland. Outside the band, Josh has pursued a successful solo career in children’s music, earning acclaim for his heartfelt and family-oriented albums.
Randall Harris
Randall Harris became Needtobreathe’s drummer in 2012, debuting with the band on Rivers in the Wasteland. His drumming has added precision and energy to the band’s music, both in the studio and live performances. Randall has also contributed as a session drummer for other artists, showcasing his versatility in the Nashville music scene.
Tyler Burkum
Tyler Burkum officially joined Needtobreathe in 2020, adding his seasoned guitar skills to the band’s repertoire. His work is prominently featured on Into the Mystery, where his dynamic playing helped shape the album’s textured sound. Tyler’s career outside the band includes touring with artists like Mat Kearney and contributing to numerous recording projects as a session guitarist.
Joe Stillwell
Joe Stillwell was a founding member and Needtobreathe’s drummer from 2001 to 2012. He played on the band’s first four albums, including The Outsiders and The Heat. After leaving the band, Joe shifted his focus to session work and collaborative projects, continuing his career as a skilled percussionist.
Nathaniel Bryant “Bo” Rinehart
Bo Rinehart, a founding member and lead guitarist of Needtobreathe, contributed to the band from 2001 until his departure in 2020. Bo’s creative input was vital to the band’s signature sound, with his work prominently featured on albums like Daylight and The Reckoning. Since leaving the band, Bo has pursued visual art and teased future solo musical endeavors.
David Leonard
David Leonard, though not a full-time member, toured with Needtobreathe as a keyboardist during their early years. Known for his work with Jackson Waters and All Sons & Daughters, David has since established a strong career in Christian music, releasing solo albums and producing for other artists.
