Revenge has always been a potent force in rock and roll. Betrayal, injustice, anger, and the desire for payback have inspired songs that range from bitter breakup statements to dark stories of retaliation. These ten tracks approach vengeance in very different ways, but every one of them carries the feeling that somebody has reached the point where enough is enough.

# 10 – Revenge Is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were) – The Veronicas

The Veronicas went straight for the throat with “Revenge Is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were)” from their 2007 album Hook Me Up. Jessica and Lisa Origliasso wrote the song with Toby Gad, who also produced the track. The song turns the end of a relationship into a sharp declaration that moving on can be its own form of revenge.

# 9 – This Means War – Joan Jett and The Blackhearts

“This Means War” appeared on Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ 1986 album Good Music. Written by Joan Jett, Bob Halligan, and Kenny Laguna, the song was also used in the 1987 film Light of Day, where it was performed by the fictional band The Barbusters. The title leaves little room for compromise, and Jett delivers it with exactly the attitude the subject demands.

# 8 – The Book – Sheryl Crow

“The Book” comes from Sheryl Crow’s self-titled 1996 album, a record with a darker and rougher edge than much of her debut. Crow produced the track and co-wrote it with Jeff Trott. The song carries the feeling of someone looking back at a damaged relationship and refusing to let the other person control the final version of the story.

# 7 – The Vengeful One – Disturbed

Disturbed returned from a four-year hiatus with “The Vengeful One,” the lead single from 2015’s Immortalized. Produced by Kevin Churko, the track brings the band’s heavy attack back with a narrator who sees himself as an instrument of judgment against a corrupt world. The song makes vengeance sound less personal and more like an apocalyptic reckoning.

# 6 – Vengeance Is Mine – Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper’s “Vengeance Is Mine” appeared on the 2008 concept album Along Came a Spider, built around the story of the fictional serial killer Spider. Greg Hampton and Danny Saber produced the album, while Slash contributes guest guitar to this track. Cooper had spent decades turning menace into theater, and this song fits perfectly into that long tradition.

# 5 – Janie’s Got a Gun – Aerosmith

Aerosmith took revenge into much darker territory with “Janie’s Got a Gun” from 1989’s Pump. Written by Steven Tyler and Tom Hamilton and produced by Bruce Fairbairn, the song tells the story of a young woman retaliating after abuse. The subject matter and cinematic arrangement made it one of the most serious and unsettling songs Aerosmith ever recorded.

# 4 – Vengeance (The Pact) – Blue Öyster Cult

“Vengeance (The Pact)” appeared on Blue Öyster Cult’s 1981 album Fire of Unknown Origin. The song was written around the Taarna story from the animated film Heavy Metal and was originally considered for the movie, but it was not ultimately used in the film. Its tale of a warrior seeking retribution for her fallen people makes it one of the most literal vengeance songs on this list.

# 3 – Mental Revenge – Waylon Jennings

Waylon Jennings recorded Mel Tillis’ “Mental Revenge” for his 1968 album Jewels, produced by Chet Atkins. The song does not need violence to make its point. Its revenge comes from imagining the person who caused the heartbreak eventually suffering the same loneliness and regret.

# 2 – Vengeance – Carly Simon

Carly Simon pushed into a harder rock sound with “Vengeance” from her 1979 album Spy, produced by Arif Mardin. The single earned Simon a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female in 1980, the first year the category was presented. The performance has a sharper edge than much of her earlier work and makes retaliation sound cool, controlled, and completely deliberate.

# 1 – You’ve Got Another Thing Coming – Judas Priest

Judas Priest delivered one of heavy metal’s great statements of defiance with “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” on 1982’s Screaming for Vengeance. Produced by Tom Allom, the track features Rob Halford over the twin guitars of K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton, with Ian Hill on bass and Dave Holland on drums. It is less a story of revenge than a warning to anyone who thinks the fight is already over, and its refusal to back down earns it the top spot here.
