Tesla’s origins trace back to Sacramento, California, where bassist Brian Wheat and guitarist Frank Hannon formed a band initially known as City Kidd. Vocalist Jeff Keith, guitarist Tommy Skeoch, and drummer Troy Luccketta completed the lineup that adopted the Tesla name and recorded its debut for Geffen Records.

Mechanical Resonance established the band through “Modern Day Cowboy,” “Little Suzi,” “Cumin’ Atcha Live,” and “Gettin’ Better.” Tesla’s combination of heavy guitars, melodic choruses, and blues-based playing separated the group from many of the more image-driven hard-rock acts surrounding it.

The Great Radio Controversy expanded that audience through “Love Song,” “Heaven’s Trail (No Way Out),” “Hang Tough,” and “The Way It Is.” The band then stripped down its arrangements for Five Man Acoustical Jam, mixing acoustic versions of its own material with “Signs,” “Lodi,” “Mother’s Little Helper,” and “We Can Work It Out.”

Psychotic Supper produced “Edison’s Medicine,” “What You Give,” “Call It What You Want,” and “Song & Emotion,” while Bust a Nut extended the original run before Tesla separated. The band reunited and returned to recording with Into the Now, followed by Forever More, Simplicity, and Shock.

Tesla repeatedly revisited the music that shaped its members. Real to Reel and its companion volume presented covers of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, Bad Company, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, and other foundational artists. Acoustic and live projects continued with Twisted Wires & the Acoustic Sessions, Mechanical Resonance Live, Five Man London Jam, and Full Throttle Live.

The band’s later catalog grew through “Cold Blue Steel,” “Time to Rock!,” and the All About Love EP, which presented four arrangements of the title song alongside a live cover and Frank Hannon’s instrumental “From the Heart.”

Homage brought Tesla’s relationship with its influences to the center of a full album. The record paired the original “Never Alone” with interpretations of songs associated with Queen, Sam Cooke, the Temptations, Elvis Presley, Bob Seger, James Brown, Supertramp, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Etta James, and others.

Tesla’s durability comes from treating rock and roll as a living tradition rather than a period costume. The group’s strongest recordings remain direct and unvarnished, whether the guitars are fully amplified, reduced to acoustic instruments, or turned toward songs that first inspired the band.
