Emerging from Woodbridge, Virginia, Collins Obinna Chibueze, professionally known as Shaboozey, built his career by combining hip-hop, country, rock, folk, and Americana without treating those traditions as separate worlds. Born on May 9, 1995, to Nigerian Igbo parents, his stage name grew from a mispronunciation of his surname by a high school football coach. His upbringing brought together his father’s interest in cowboy clothing and country music with the hip-hop videos and visual storytelling that captured his imagination.

Shaboozey began releasing music during his teenage years while also developing skills in photography and video production. His early singles, including “Jeff Gordon,” demonstrated a rap-centered approach, but his writing and production gradually expanded toward the Western imagery and genre-blending sound that became central to his identity.

His debut studio album, Lady Wrangler, was released in 2018. The album included “Winning Streak,” “The Plan,” “Angels,” “Faithfully,” “Golden Child,” “Dream,” and “Warped Tour.” Its combination of hip-hop production, rock references, and cowboy imagery introduced many of the ideas that would define his later work.

Shaboozey released his second album, Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die, in 2022. The 14-song record included “Beverly Hills,” “Tall Boy,” “Rodeo World Champion,” “Snake,” “GAS!,” “Hanging High,” “Sick as Hell,” and “Why Can’t Cowboys Cry?” The album pushed further into country and Americana while retaining the rhythmic foundation of his earlier recordings.

His third studio album, Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going, arrived on May 31, 2024. Featuring Paul Cauthen, Noah Cyrus, and BigXthaPlug, the album developed as a cinematic journey through bars, highways, heartbreak, regret, and reinvention. Its songs included “Let It Burn,” “Vegas,” “Anabelle,” “Highway,” “Horses & Hellcats,” “Last of My Kind,” “My Fault,” and “Drink Don’t Need No Mix.”

The album’s breakthrough single, “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” became one of the most successful recordings in Billboard Hot 100 history. It spent 19 nonconsecutive weeks at number one, tying the chart’s longevity record, while also establishing Shaboozey as the first Black male artist to lead Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts simultaneously.

His visibility expanded through two appearances on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter: “SPAGHETTII,” with Linda Martell, and “SWEET ★ HONEY ★ BUCKIIN’.” These recordings introduced his voice to an even wider audience and reinforced the larger cultural conversation surrounding Black artists and the history of country music.

In April 2025, Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going: The Complete Edition expanded the original album from 12 to 18 tracks. The additional songs were “Amen” with Jelly Roll, “Hail Mary” featuring Sierra Ferrell, “Fire and Gasoline,” “Blink Twice” with Myles Smith, “Good News,” and “Chrome.” “Amen” later earned Shaboozey and Jelly Roll the 2026 Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

Shaboozey’s 2025 releases also included “Home” with BigXthaPlug, Burna Boy’s “Change Your Mind,” “Took A Walk” with Stephen Wilson Jr., and “Move On” with Kevin Powers. These collaborations continued his movement across country, hip-hop, Afrobeats, soundtrack music, and contemporary pop.

In 2026, Shaboozey introduced his next chapter with “Born To Die” and “Cowgirl.” Both songs appear on his announced fourth studio album, The Outlaw Cherie Lee & Other Western Tales, a 20-song project scheduled for July 31, 2026.

Shaboozey has received one Grammy Award from eight nominations. His 2025 nominations included Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Best Country Song, Best Country Solo Performance, and Best Melodic Rap Performance. In 2026, “Good News” received two additional nominations, while “Amen” delivered his first Grammy victory.

Across his music, videos, fashion, and storytelling, Shaboozey has resisted narrow definitions of country and hip-hop. His work draws on immigrant experience, Virginia landscapes, Western mythology, personal ambition, and the shared narrative traditions that connect American genres.
