Spiritbox emerged from Victoria, British Columbia, after vocalist Courtney LaPlante and guitarist Mike Stringer left Iwrestledabearonce in search of greater artistic freedom. Publicly established in 2017, the band developed around LaPlante and Stringer before expanding into a full lineup that now includes drummer Zev Rose and bassist Josh Gilbert.

The self-titled Spiritbox EP introduced the project in 2017 through “The Mara Effect” trilogy, “Aphids,” “Everything’s Eventual,” “10:16,” and “The Beauty of Suffering.” The Singles Collection followed in 2019 with “Perennial,” “Electric Cross,” “Trust Fall,” “Belcarra,” and “Bleach Bath.” Stand-alone recordings including “Rule of Nines” and “Blessed Be” helped expand the band’s audience before its first full-length album.

Eternal Blue arrived in 2021 with “Sun Killer,” “Circle With Me,” “Holy Roller,” “Constance,” “Secret Garden,” “Hurt You,” “Yellowjacket,” and the title track. The album combined metalcore, progressive metal, djent, atmospheric pop, and electronic production while giving LaPlante room to move between intimate singing and extreme vocals. It reached number thirteen on the Billboard 200.

The three-song Rotoscope EP followed in 2022 with “Rotoscope,” “Sew Me Up,” and “Hysteria.” That same year, Spiritbox collaborated with ILLENIUM on “Shivering,” merging the band’s metal production with melodic bass music and electronic drops.

The Fear of Fear arrived in 2023 with “Cellar Door,” “Jaded,” “Too Close / Too Late,” “Angel Eyes,” “The Void,” and “Ultraviolet.” “Jaded” received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. Spiritbox also joined Megan Thee Stallion for the “Cobra (Rock Remix)” and later appeared on “TYG,” extending the band’s genre-crossing collaborations beyond the metal world.

Spiritbox released its second studio album, Tsunami Sea, in 2025. “Fata Morgana,” “Black Rainbow,” “Perfect Soul,” “Keep Sweet,” “Soft Spine,” “A Haven With Two Faces,” “No Loss, No Love,” “Crystal Roses,” “Ride the Wave,” and “Deep End” expanded the band’s balance of punishing heaviness, melodic atmosphere, progressive structures, and electronic detail.

The Tsunami Sea era also brought further recognition. “Soft Spine” earned another Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance, and Spiritbox performed the song during the 2026 Grammy Premiere Ceremony. The album reached number one on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart and number twenty-six on the Billboard 200.

Spiritbox continued collaborating outside its own releases through BABYMETAL’s “My Queen” and “Under My Skin,” recorded with SLANDER and Vastive. Released in 2026 after years of development and live testing, “Under My Skin” combined Courtney LaPlante’s vocals and Mike Stringer’s guitar work with melodic bass production and festival-sized electronic drops.

Across its catalog, Spiritbox has repeatedly used contrast as a creative weapon. Heavy passages become more violent because of the space around them, while clean melodies gain tension from the possibility that the arrangement may collapse into something harsher. That ability to move between beauty, anxiety, rage, grief, and restraint has made the band one of the defining modern acts in heavy music.
