The Marías built their name out of Los Angeles’ independent music scene, where a meeting between vocalist María Zardoya and drummer-producer Josh Conway in 2016 quickly became something more than chance. Zardoya, born in Puerto Rico and raised in Atlanta, brought a striking voice and bilingual artistry, seamlessly blending English and Spanish lyrics. Conway, already an experienced musician, recognized the uniqueness of her sound, and the two began creating songs that would later become the foundation for one of the most distinctive modern acts to emerge from Southern California’s music culture.

A deliberate focus on atmosphere and tone marked the early days of The Marías. Their live performances quickly gained attention around Los Angeles for their dreamlike quality, enhanced by cinematic lighting and fluid arrangements that merged indie pop, soul, and jazz influences. They soon expanded into a full band, featuring guitarist Jesse Perlman and keyboardist Edward James, which solidified the chemistry that would define their sound. It was during this formative period that they began to craft the songs that would appear on their first releases.

Their debut EP, Superclean Vol. I, arrived in 2017 and introduced listeners to their signature fusion of smooth vocals, hazy instrumentals, and bilingual lyrics. The response was immediate. Fans were drawn to the group’s ability to create music that was both intimate and sonically expansive. A year later, they followed with Superclean Vol. II, which continued the aesthetic of its predecessor but with greater depth and refinement. These two releases laid the foundation that helped The Marías transition from local acclaim to national recognition, securing their place among the most promising new names in alternative music.

By 2020, The Marías signed with Atlantic Records, a move that positioned them to bring their vision to a much larger audience. Their debut full-length album, Cinema, released in 2021, lived up to its title with a production style that evoked imagery and emotion as vividly as a film. The album explored love, identity, and imagination through lush soundscapes and delicate harmonies. Its single “Hush” became a breakout success, climbing to number one on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart. Cinema not only showcased the band’s refined songwriting but also emphasized their commitment to bilingual storytelling, seamlessly blending English and Spanish verses into one cohesive artistic statement.

The success of Cinema led to extensive touring and collaborations that continued to raise their profile. In 2022, The Marías joined Halsey on her Love and Power tour, performing to sold-out arenas and winning over new fans with each show. That same year, their collaboration with Bad Bunny on the track “Otro Atardecer” from his album Un Verano Sin Ti expanded their reach into the Latin pop and reggaeton world, further demonstrating their versatility and broad cultural appeal.

Their growth as artists continued with the release of their second studio album, Submarine, in 2024. Supported by the singles “Run Your Mouth,” “Lejos de Ti,” and “No One Noticed,” the record deepened their exploration of sound, leaning into both nostalgia and modern experimentation. The album reinforced the unique duality at the heart of The Marías’ music: smooth and atmospheric yet grounded in genuine emotional resonance.

Throughout their career, The Marías have become known not only for their music but also for their commitment to visual presentation and creative independence. Their videos, stage designs, and even their album artwork reflect an intentional aesthetic approach that mirrors the music’s elegance and intimacy. María Zardoya’s voice remains the band’s focal point, capable of shifting from soothing whispers to soulful melodies, with a calm authority that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
