The New Radicals were an American band that briefly shone in the late 1990s with their unique blend of pop, rock, funk, and soul, centered around the frontman and primary songwriter, Gregg Alexander. The band was formed in 1997 by Gregg Alexander. In the end, what we heard was a band really tuned into the soulfulness of 90s R&B
Gregg Alexander had been a solo artist before forming New Radicals, with a career stretching back to the late 1980s. He released two solo albums Michigan Rain, in 1989 and Intoxifornication, in 1992 that failed to find mainstream success. Alexander then formed the New Radicals.
The band’s lineup incuded Danielle Brisebois, a former child actress turned musician who contributed vocals and percussion; guitarist Michael “Fish” Herring, known for his work with Prince; and keyboardist and programmer Nick Lashley. Various session musicians, including bassist John Pierce and drummer Josh Freese rounded out the group.
The New Radicals’ debut and only album, Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too, was released in 1998. The album’s lead single, “You Get What You Give,” became a pretty big hit. However, Gregg Alexander disbanded the New Radicals in mid-1999 despite the single’s success. Gregg Alexander went on to write and produce songs for other artists, earning acclaim for his work, including a Grammy Award for the song “Game of Love,” performed by Santana and Michelle Branch.
Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too
Released 1998
Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too is the sole album by the alternative rock band New Radicals, released in 1998. The album became notable for its anthemic single “You Get What You Give.” The album’s recording primarily took place at Mondo Studios, Los Angeles, and Sunset Sound. It’s a fun album that crosses many musical styles. We wish the band, had released more than just their lone album.
